I have researched the Nathaniel Carlisle family for a long time and have
some observations about info sent to the list. Some info is census record
info I have copied. If anyone is interested, I would exchange info with you.
First, Nathaniel's will mentions directly and indirectly 14 children and
from census records, there must have been a 15th. So the children I have
are Mary "Polly", the mother of Guilford Whelass, the mother of Benjamin
Butts, Richard, William, Nancy, James, John, Joel, Chambless, Rebecca,
Nathaniel (Jr), Sally, Jesse, and the one indicated in census records.
I have a copy of this will. There are a few words that I couldn't read.

Now for Halifax Co NC census records for NathanielL
Names of children are in this order because of their ages given in
census records beginning in 1850 and later.
In 1786 NC state census: Nathaniel Carlile 1 1 4 1
1 m 21 - 60 (Nathaniel)
1 m < 21 or > 60 (Richard)
4 f (wife, Polly, ch #2, & ch #3)
1 B < 12 or > 50
Child #2 & #3 would be the mothers of Guilford Whelass and Benjamin Butts.
In 1790 NC census: Nathaniel Carlile 1 2 6 0
1 m 21 - 60 (Nathaniel)
2 m < 21 (Richard & Wm)
6 f (wife, Polly, ch #2, ch #3, Nancy, & ch #7)
In 1800 NC census: Nathaniel 4 2 0 1 - 1 0 1 0 1
4 m 0 - 10 (1790 - 1800) (James, John, Joel, & Chambless)
2 m 10 - 16 (1784 - 1790) (Richard & Wm )
1 m 26 - 45 (1755 - 1774) (Nathaniel)
1 f 0 - 10 (1790 - 1800) (Rebecca)
1 f 16 - 26 (1774 - 1784) (Nancy)
1 f 45+ (bef 1756) (wife)
Children #2, #3, Polly, & #7 are gone.
#2, #3, & Polly are probably married, but # 7 would not be old
enough to be married, so she must be deceased.
1810 NC census:
Nathniel 2 2 2 0 1 - 2 0 1 1 + 1 slave
2 m 0 - 10 (1800 - 1810) (Nathaniel Jr & Jesse)
2 m 10 - 16 (1794 - 1800) (Joel & Chambless)
2 m 16 - 26 (1784 - 1794) (John & William)
1 m 45+ (bef 1765) (Nathaniel)
2 f 0 - 10 (1800 - 1810) (Sally & Rebecca)
1 f 16 - 26 (1784 - 1794) (Nancy)
1 f 26 - 45 (wife)
Wife was 45+ age group in 1800 census and 26 - 45 age group in 1810.
So wife must have died between 1800 and 1810 and Nathaniel has remarried
a younger lady.
1820 NC census:
Lydia 0 1 0 2 0 0 - 0 0 1 0 1 - 0 3
1 m 10 - 15 (1805 - 1810) (Jesse)
2 m 18 - 25 (1795 - 1802) (Chambless & Nathaniel Jr)
1 f 16 - 26 (1794 - 1804) (Sally)
1 f 45+ (bef 1775) (Lydia)
1830 NC census:
Jesse was suppose to care for his mother in order to have the home
place. And Lydia must be with him in 1830 census
1 m 0 - 5
1 m 20 - 30 (Jesse)
1 f 0 - 5
1 f 20 - 30 (Mary)
1 f 50 - 60 (Lydia) b: between 1770 & 1780
As Lydia was 45+ in 1820, which would make her b: bef 1775 and then with
the info from 1830 census, she was actually born between 1770 and 1775.
So she could not have been the mother of the oldest children of Nathaniel
Sr.

Deeds info
Deed Book 13 - Halifax Co NC - 575(605)
On 6 Sep 1777 Nathaniel Carlisle bought 150 acres in Dist 10 Halifax Co NC
from Joseph Whealis for 53 pounds 6 shillings 8 pense, joining Breeches
Swamp,
John Marshall, & Joseph Whales. (different spelling of Wheless but probably
same person). In his will this was lent to his widow then son, Jesse
received
it, but he must care for his mother, Lydia.
Deed Book 18 - Halifax Co NC - 732 (615)
Iles Cooper of Halifax Co. to Nathaniel Carlisle of same. 28 Apr 1800.
115 silver dollars. 65 acres, joing middle prong of Turkey Branch. Iles
Cooper.
Wit: Jonathan Edwards, William Herbert, Nancy (x) Cooper. May Ct 1800
L. Long CCT. In his will, son Chambliss was to receive this land.
Deed Book ? 1800
Nathaniel also bought 50 acres known as "Old Orchard" that he willed to
his
son Nathaniel (Jr)
---------
For approximate birth date of Nathaniel:
1790 census 21 - 60, b: bet 1730 & 1769
1800 census 26 - 45, b: bet 1755 & 1774
combine these two would make born between 1755 & 1769
1810 census 45+, b: by 1765 or before...
combine this with the between 1755 & 1769 would be b: between 1755 and 1765.
As he bought land in 1777, he would have to be at least 21 in 1777 or born
1756 before. Using the between 1755 & 1765 from the census above, he was
born
between 1755 & 1756.

it is this Rebecca, the dau of Nathaniel.)

m: 30 Jul 1825 Mary Wadkins

I have corresponded with a Chambless researcher who thinks this
Nathaniel Carlisle is the son of Richard & Mary (Chambless) Carlisle.
Richard Carlisle d: 1739 in Prince George Co VA. Not long thereafter,
Mary moved with some of her children to Albemarle Parish, Sussex Co VA.
This Richard and Mary (Chambless) Carlisle had several children and one
that was listed in Bristol Parish Register was a Nathaniel Carlisle, born
2 Jan 1721. This birth date does not fit with the ages Nathaniel gave on
census records. They would indicate he was born between 1755 and 1765. If
the ages are wrong on the census records and Nathaniel is the son of this
Richard and Mary, he would have been a very old man, for those times, when
he died between the time he wrote his will in 1807 and it was proved in
1812.
I think there is a relationship between this Richard & Mary (Chambless)
Carlisle and the Nathaniel Carlisle that died in Halifax Co NC.
Reason: Nathaniel named first son Richard and first daughter Mary.
But he also named a son Chambless which is an unusual given name and
would indicate that the son was named for a family.
Mary (Chambless) Carlisle had a brother Joel, Nathaniel named a child Joel.
Joel Chambless was in the 1786 NC state census in Nap of Reeds District of
Granville Co NC. Granville Co formed 1746 from Edgecombe Co. Halifax formed
1758 from Edgecombe Co. There was also a Nathaniel Chamblis (sp) in Surry Co
in 1786.
As the census records for age of Nathaniel indicate he was born much later
than the Nathaniel, s/o Richard & Mary (Chambless) Carlisle, I think this
Nathaniel in Halifax Co NC must be a grandson of Richard & Mary. But I
have not been able to find the link. I have not been able to follow their
son Nathaniel. He disappears after his birth was registered in parish
register. Any help on this would be appreciated.
From census records, it appears that Nathaniel was married at least
twice
and Lydia was his last wife. I believe that the children of Nathaniel &
Lydia are the last 3, Nathaniel (Jr), Sarah, & Jesse and possibly the 2
before, Chambless & Rebecca.
Would like comments of people researching this line.
