We have just found a legal notation RE: William Carley the Mariner, and a John Carter in
English naval records -
WILLIAM the Mariner WHO TOOK A JOHN Carter FROM LONDON AGAINST POPPLE ORDERS IN 1722
Boston April 12th 1722
Note subscribed by captain james stewart hms .Winchester.to the bond of William carley
master of the sloop popple of boston.I am very credibly informed that the above mentioned
carley did carry away from hence, one john carter belonging to the four brothers, john
squarry master, and then incurred the penalty of said bond.
The William Cearley of VA who married Martha Patty Carter, thought to be a descendant of
the Rev. Samuel Carter who purchased the Lancaster property of William Kerly, Sr. from
Capt. Henry in 1688. The above gives us new ties to the probability that William the
Mariner and his wife Mary Bowden were the parents of above William Cearley.
Can anyone find any further information??
