James A. Carley is mentioned in the 1820 Revolutionary War pension application of Benjamin
Burgess, who was my 5x-great-grandfather (see URL below, and look at image 199, near the
middle of the page):
-----"My family consists of myself my wife Elizabeth [Elizabeth (Paine) Burgess] aged
69 years old and not able to do much labour and a grand child named James A. Carley aged
10 years which I am obliged to support."-----
I do not know if James A. Carley was truly Benjamin Burgess' grandson, or whether
Burgess used the term "grand child" in a colloquial way. Regardless, it would
seem that Burgess and his wife had custody and financial responsibility for Carley,
perhaps indicating that Carley was orphaned. This is an interesting topic for further
research - please keep me informed if you find additional information.
