"Sifting Carley's, A Study" or, "My Branch of Congregational Church
Ancestry and Descendants"
Billye D. Jackson 6 Nov 2007 [that is, IF I could stick Joseph Jr to Joseph Jr to
Quartus with a real record, I'd prove that connection. Without that, it's just a
fable that this is MY tree]
William & Ann>Henry>Bartholomew>Peter>Joseph Carley, Sr. of Leicester,
Worcester, MA (His father Peter inherited Leicester land from his parent Bartholomew prior
to records of land being kept for this area, per history info)
Joseph (Sr., "of Whitingham," to keep separated from other Joseph's)
b 7 Feb 1717/18 Leicester, Worcester, MA
M 7 Feb 1748/49 Leicester, Worcester, MA
to Sarah (Sally)Washburn (Parent Washburn's went from Bridgewater to Fairfield to
Leicester. No Carley's in Bridgewater, Plymouth, MA)
Lived in Leicester from 1717 to bet 1767
d 1810 -1817 (date not settled in my mind, I have the proof, but not at hand.)
Joseph, Sr. began moving slightly westward toward Brookfield (Joseph Jr.md d/o Gilbert of
Brookfield) and Ware, MA He is likely in Ware before 22 Oct 1772, date son Joseph m Sally
Gilbert in Ware, MA. Joseph, Sr.'s last child b in Ware 5 Feb 1778.
At one point between these years, Joseph was warned out of Western, MA, which is now
Warren, then was of the area of Old Hoosick [*Old Hoosick in early years stretched from
current Hoosick, NY over eastward to North Adams, MA, encompassing Williamstown, MA and I
think, Pownal, VT. I have a copy of that, but not at hand, dated early & w/family
also listed, so date is after their births.
In the war years his older sons Peter and Jonathan join RW forces (Sr. is attributed with
one, but didn't get a pension. I believe it is really Joseph, Jr.'s record, as
Sr. would have unable, due to age, to have done what is attributed him)
After the RW, son Joseph, Jr. and Jonathan are found in Pownal, VT 5 miles above
Williamstown, MA where son Quartus (son of Joseph, Jr.) is born. Joseph, Jr. (Quartus
move westward (this area is early years called Old Hoosick) from Pownal, VT to
Bridgewater, NY 1800, Jonathan moves eastward to Whitingham and his father Joseph, Sr. and
his mother move there with him, where both died and are buried, as is Jonathan moved to
Whitingham, Windham, VT
All these events occurred in the small circle of Leicester, Quaboag, Ware, Warren, MA,
then Hoosick, Williamstown, Pownal and Whitingham & Jr into Bridgewater, Oswego, here
I believe he died.
This Joseph appears to have remained in a smallish area until moving to VT to live,
possibly because his wife was born there or because of their increasing age. Wife Sarah
Washburn supposed to have been b in Whitingham 14 Sep 1722.

*bef 1810-1817In Whitingham, Windham, VT. Died there.
My view: From looking at all records of this family, it has no direct connections to any
CT Carley's, nor any NY Carley's of other areas of early NY, prior to Joseph, Sr.
It would have some earlier via Peter/Bartholomew, etc, possibly.
This Carley branch does have strong CT connections (documented) coming from other families
later marrying into this line of Carley's in Leicester, who had come from Fairfield,
the Smedley's, Warren's or Waring, Kilburn. (Jedediah Smedley and Henry Warren
families)
Judy's right, we wish they'd all have left better tracks, then I'd have a
chance of finding that missing document I need, maybe!
