This is quite amazing - Judith! Thank you so much for doing this.
I have older but thorough research material; my second cousin (long
passed) did geneology work well before the internet, spent years
driving the country with his nose in any, every county record book he
could find. It was his full-time job for a decade.
I'd like to simply write Boyde's words on William Kerly Sr (Boyde
Carley's whole book is far too much for me to sit and type), and see
if anything is of interest to you. I realize parts vary, I'm only
copying what his research, probably done in the mid-seventies,
revealed. Obviously, your information is more detailed and up-to-date.
"Kerly, William Sr., b. Ashmore, County Dorset, Englcan ca. 1583 d.
14Jul 1670. Immigarted to US on ship Confidence, 17 Jul 1737. William
is listed as a planter and landowner at Hingham, Mass. In May 164, he
signed a Sudbury tax protests. William landed at Higham Mass and was
one of the first planters at Hull and one of the founders of Sudbury.
He became a 'freeman' in 1647 and was on of the founders of Lancaster.
(copy of Lancaster Covenant, 1652 attached, signed by both William Sr
and Jr). om 1653, being a prudential manager. Later William moved to
Marlboro (see Pioneers of Mass, by Charles Henry Pope, p 267). At
Lancaster, William and his two sons acquired considerable land and
held important offices. In Sudbury, when appealed to by his fellow
townsmen to erect a bridge of Sudbury River, he built the bridge and
his specifications, still in the town clerk's office, are so precise
and clear that an artist was able to reconstruct the bridge in a
drawing (also attached). His will was dated 26 May 1669, with
inventory taken 18 Jul 1670. In June 1669, now about 76 years old, Wm
was exempted from military duty and paid 5s yearly for use by teh
military company (see History of Cambridge, by Page) William served as
a Select-man at Marlboro."
He also found 1 other Carley on the Confidence Edmund, and a Goodman
Kerley in "Farly Records of Lancaste"r by Henry S Noruse - but does
not follow them and believes they are not related.
Anything of interest to you here?

There was another William KERLEY, b, according to to his testimony
in Middlesex Court Records, in 1621. This is the William who came
to America on the "Confidence" with an Edmund KERLEY of whom nothing
else is known. This William however, went first to Hull, MA and was
pre-enlisted to become a fisherman, an occupation he had no desire
to follow. It is from there that it appears that he then settled in
Barnstable, where he ran into some legal difficulties and Anthony
Annable and Henry Rowley became bondsmen for him there. The name was
spelled in the records as Kersley. He then appears in Sudbury,
presumably to join his uncle? William Kerly, Sr and there married on
October 06, 1646, Anna King, daughter of Thomas, Jr and Ann Collins
King.
In the history of Lancaster, where the primary Kerly/Kerley family
settled after leaving Sudbury, there is no account of William and
Anna King Kerley. They are not mentioned as survivors of the
Massacre there in 1676 and it is noted in an account cited in
Middlesex Court Files, that he (William) had left Lancaster for
Marlborough well before that Massacre. It is also known that he was
a member of the Artillery Company, as was his cousin Henry, to whom
he refers in his Will as "brother", which can be construed as a very
close relative or as a brother at arms. Either and both
interpretations are probably correct.
Since there is no mention of a Bartholomew KERLEY/CARLEY in any of
the references to the survivors at Lancaster, one must also conclude
that he is most likely the son of the William of the "Confidence"
and wife Anna King, as he is noted in the American Genealogical-
Biographical Index as having been born in 1650, a fact that has been
ignored by all other researchers, as that couple is noted as having
married in late 1646. He has commonly been incorrectly attributed
as a child of Capt. Henry Kerley and first wife Elizabeth White, a
concept that becomes hard to accept, as they were not married until
1654.
I realize that this is probably difficult to follow and may be quite
shocking to many old time researchers - and that we are breaking a
lot of new ground here with all of this information, however, if one
reads the history carefully and questions the material that I find
requires leaps of faith to accept - material that has become gospel
- I think ultimately that history will bear me out in all of these
findings. I have only followed each person as an individual, not as
part of the misinterpretations that others have accepted blindly.
So, welcome to the family Kerly --
Judy
