We believe James to be the son of Rev. John J. Carley of Fairfield and wife Mary Hubbell -
son James b. December 25, 1778. His siblings were: Charlotte; Nancy m. Levi Davis;
Thaddeus m. Rachel Whitford; Lucretia m. John Skiff; Artemesy m. Sherwood Wood; Rowena m.
Gilead Hyatt; and Sabrina.
Rev. John b. @ 1752 was either the son of Abraham and Susannah Jackson Carley, or the son
of John and Sarah Sherwood Carley of Westport, Fairfield, CT -- Abraham was the son of
John and Sarah, married very young and since they were both of child bearing ages, it is
hard to distinguish the children of the two.
Abraham and Susannah were known to have had - Sarah? - may have been daughter of John and
Sarah, m. Joseph Griswold; Joel, b. 1748, m. Elshe Stever; Martha, b. 1750; John, b.
1752?; Job, b. 1754, m. Hannah Lewis; Albert A. b. 175(5?), m. Hannah Covey; Jonathan,
b. 1757, m. Jenny Gray. Abraham died in 1758 and Susanna remarried a cousin of his,
Thaddeus Gray in 1759.
John and Sarah Sherwood Carley moved to the Oblong, Dutchess Co., NY by 1760 as noted in
her father David Sherwood's Will and evidently took Abraham and Susannah's
children with them as at least three of the sons names appear on the Roster for the
Volunteer Militia of Dutchess County during the Rev. War.
Good luck with your search - I have the early history of the Carley/Kerley/Kerly family
dating back to 1602 in England if you are interested.
