David West Carley was born 14 Aug 1786 in Nobletown (soon to be Hillsdale), Columbia
County, New York, son of Abraham and Eve Carley. His father was the Abraham Carley born 9
May 1756 in Marlborough, Massachusetts.
David West Carley married Anna Krum around 1804, probably in Schoharie County, New York.
Anna was born before 12 Nov 1786, her baptism date at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran
Church in Livingston, New York. Her father, John Krum, had moved from Hillsdale to
Schoharie as early as 1803 since his daughter Elizabeth was born or baptized 5 Feb 1803 at
Middleburgh. His earlier children were born in the Hillsdale area. In 1806 David West and
Anna Carley were members of the Gilboa Reformed Church in Schoharie.
David West Carley and family were in Blenheim Township, Schoharie County, in 1810. The sex
and ages of the family members listed are consistent with his family at that time with the
exception of one male who is between the ages of 16 to 25. This may have been his younger
brother Brookins.
David West Carley and family were in Charleston Township, Montgomery County, New York, in
1820. The sex and ages of the family members listed are consistent with his family at that
time. Brookins Carley is on the very next line of the census with his own young family.
Brookins age was between 16 and 25. Brookins Carley named his son born in 1823 David West
Carley, whose biographical sketch is posted elsewhere.
David West Carley is absent from the 1830 census, but Ann Carley is listed on the 1830
census as the head of the household in Middleburgh, Schoharie County, New York. She is
identified as a widow. She must have moved after the death of her husband to be closer to
her father and other members of the Krum family. They are all on the same page of the
census. The younger children are all with her. Malinda had married in 1827. Lewis P. was
either dead or on his own - not found again. The other two older boys may be living with
either Henry or John Krum who were living nearby, as there are two adult males of the
right age in each household.
During the 1830s the Carleys and several of the Krums migrated from Schoharie County to
Tompkins County. By 1832 several of the Carley brothers' names began appearing in the
ledger of a general store in Cayutaville, Town of Catherine, Tompkins (later Schuyler)
County, New York. John K. and Abram appear in 1832. Richard and William A. appear in 1833.
John Krum Carley's sons Lewis and William A. appeared in 1851. Also entered in 1832
was the future father-in-law of Richard, Simeon Van Horn. While John K. and Abraham
remained in New York, the three younger brothers, Richard, William A., and David, left for
Illinois in the early 1840s.
Anna Krum Carley also moved to Tompkins County, where sometime between 1838 and 1850 she
married the widower Josiah Cleveland. He died 31 Mar 1853 in Ulysses, Tompkins County,
leaving her widowed for a second time. By 1860 Anna was living with her son David Henry
West Carley in Northfield, Summit County, Ohio. She was still living (age 84) with him in
1870 in Ashland, Saunders County, Nebraska.
David West Carley and Anna Krum had nine children.
Malinda Carley was born 13 Jan 1805 in Blenheim, Schoharie County. She married John Gates
in Middleburgh, Schoharie County. They had ten children and stayed in Schoharie. She died
Mar 16 1891 in Middleburgh.
Lewis Patchen Carley was born on 09 Nov 1806 in Blenheim, Schoharie County, and baptized
in 1807 at the Gilboa Reformed Church. Nothing else is known about him.
John Krum Carley was born 29 Nov 1808 in Blenheim, Schoharie County. By 1840 John K.
Carley was in Hector Township, Tompkins (later Schuyler) County, New York. John Krum
Carley married Ruth M. Evans. They had seven children, two of whom were sons named after
John's brothers - Lewis P. born in 1835, and William A. born in 1841. John Krum Carley
remained in New York for the rest of his life, died 10 Jun 1883, and is buried in the
Laurel Hill Cemetery in the Town of Catherine, Schuyler County.
Abraham Carley was born in 1811 in Schoharie County. By 1832 he had moved from Schoharie
to Tompkins (later Schuyler) County. He married Lydia Clark and they had two children,
Clark A. born in 1843, and John H. born in 1845. Abraham and Lydia Carley bought 46 acres
of land near Cayutaville in the Town of Catherine in 1846. On the same page of the 1850
census were his brother John, as well as David and Daniel Krum. The Abraham Carley family
stayed in New York. In 1877 Abraham Carley attended a centennial celebration in the Town
of Catherine where his age was given as 65.
Richard F. Carley was born 11 Oct 1816, probably in Schoharie County. By 1833 he was
living in the Town of Catherine, Tompkins County, New York. He married Matilda Van Horn by
1839. She was born around 1818 and was the daughter of Simeon Van Horn of Hector, Tompkins
County. They had moved to Barrington, Cook County, Illinois, by 1842 where Richard bought
160 acres of land in three purchases in 1842, 1843, and 1844. They were still in
Barrington for the 1850 census. Richard and Matilda had three children. Simeon Earl Carley
was born 19 Nov 1839 near Watkins Glen, New York. William Carley was born 4 Feb 1844 in
Barrington. Emma Carley was born 12 Feb 1850 in Barrington. In 1854 Matilda Carley died in
Barrington, Illinois. Her tombstone in The Union Cemetery reads: "Matilde, wife of
R.F. Carly / Died, 1854". In 1858 Richard F. Carley settled in central Wisconsin,
just south of Stevens Point, living first in Buena Vista and later in Plover, Portage
County. By 1860 Richard F. Car!
ley married Mary Jane Segar, who was on the 1860 census as his wife. They had two
children, Franklin Carley born in 1861 and Andrew Carley born in 1865. Richard F. Carley
married for the third time to Caroline M. Smith on 22 Feb 1886 in Portage County,
Wisconsin. Richard farmed and was a land speculator. Richard died on 29 Oct 1891 in Plover
Township, Portage County, Wisconsin. He is buried in the Plover Cemetery.
Catharine Carley was born before 1820. Nothing else is known about her.
William Andrus Carley was born in 1820. In 1843 in two transactions he bought 120 acres of
land in Dundee, Kane County, Illinois, just across the river from his brother Richard. In
1844 he was the co-owner of a brick foundry in Elgin, Kane County, Illinois. He was 30
years old and a millwright in Dundee, Kane County in 1850. He married Fanny Matteson on 19
Jun 1850 in Kane, Illinois. He may be the William A. Carley who shows up on the tax
assessment rolls in Washington County, Oregon, in 1856, 1857, and 1858.
Anna Elisa Carley was born after 1820. Nothing else is known about her.
David Henry West Carley was born in 1826. He went to Illinois with his brothers Richard
and William in the early 1840s. He was living with his brother Richard's family in
1850. An expanded biographical sketch of DHW Carley is posted elsewhere on this forum.
