Message Board Post:
A decade ago I posted a question on a forum asking if anyone could help me connect my
ancestor Richard Carley to any earlier Carleys. Richard had been born on 11 Oct 1816 in
New York, moved to Illinois, and finally settled in central Wisconsin around the time of
the Civil War. No direct connection was known but through the years several kind cousins
offered information that has been useful in finding Richard's parents.
So, first of all, I offer a heartfelt 'Thank You!' to Bob Lefler, Matthew Porter,
and Judy Josephson (now Schreiber). Someone had found a list of the children of David
Carley and Anna Krum. To quote from Bob Lefler's email: "Their children were:
Malinda, Lewis, John, Abram, Richard, William Andrus, Catherine, Anna Elisa, David."
It may have been just a bit of information someone had collected, but I considered it
interesting because I had found a David Carley living with my Richard F. Carley on the
1850 census for Barrington, Illinois. Richard was 34 and David was 24. By the 1860 census
Richard F. Carley was in central Wisconsin. David Carley was in southwestern Wisconsin in
1860, but his age was off by a few years. Was this David the same one who had been living
in Barrington in 1850 or was this another David? Were either the son of David and Anna
Carley?
I have sorted out these three David Carleys, their parents, and their families. I will
post profiles of each one on this forum. Sources will be made available upon request.
Further explorations are encouraged so long as supporting documentation exists.
