Doctor David West Carley was born 30 Apr 1823 in Westford, Otsego County, New York. His
parents were Brookins and Rachel (Bennett) Carley, both natives of New York State.
In 1845 at the age of 22 David West Carley began the study of medicine with Dr. Charles
M. Turner in Tompkins County, New York. By 1850 David was continuing his studies in
Whitewater, Wisconsin, with Doctors Lee and Brewer. David West Carley married Lucinda M.
Green and they had a son, Frank P. Carley, born in 1854. David West Carley graduated from
the Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, in 1856.
Doctor David West Carley married Marcia Clark on 11 Feb 1857 in Westford, New York. She
born on 28 Apr 1834, and was the daughter of Hezekiah Clark. They went to Platteville,
Wisconsin, where he formed a brief partnership with Doctor John D. Wood. In 1857 they
moved to Boscobel, Grant County, Wisconsin, where he established his own practice. The
1860 census shows the family in Boscobel with children Frank age 6 and Fred age 1.
In 1862 Doctor David West Carley was commissioned a 2nd Assistant Surgeon in the 33rd
Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He held this position until February 1864, when he resigned
on account of ill health. The 33rd Wisconsin V.I. fought in the western theater under
Generals Grant and Sherman, engaging in many skirmishes and battles, perhaps the best
known being Vicksburg. The 33rd lost almost six times more men to disease than to combat.
The 1870 census shows Doctor David W. Carley, wife M.C., and children Frank age 16, Fred
age 12, Ed age 8, and Mertie age 5, all living in Boscobel, Wisconsin. His wife, Marcia,
died 30 Sep 1871. He married Mary Elizabeth Partridge on 10 Apr 1872. The 1877 plat maps
of Grant County show D W Carley owning 20 acres just west of Boscobel, 160 acres just
north of Boscobel, and 48.2 acres a few miles further north, closer to Blue River,
Wisconsin. All his parcels of land were close to the Wisconsin River. In 1880 the family
was still in Boscobel and consisted of Doctor David W. Carley, wife Mary, and children
Fred age 21, Ed age 18, and Mertie age 15.
The Veterans' Schedule gives us Doctor David West Carley's location in 1890, once
again Boscobel, Wisconsin. The Wisconsin State Census of 1895 also places him in Boscobel.
The 1895 plat map of Grant County shows D W Carley still owning the 20 and 160 acre plots
near Boscobel but not the plot closer to Blue River. Doctor David West Carley died in
Boscobel, Grant County, Wisconsin, on 26 May 1896.
