Deborah -
As you can see on the date of this from my notes I've had this for a very long time -
I don't know if Fran is still around but as I recall she lived in Canada -- The Albert
A. that she mentions is NOT my Albert A. and was somewhat younger by almost 100 years -

Dear Judy:
So much to search through: around 1790 there was a overview of a first census of Canada
by the Genealogical Reseach Society of Canada and they have listed some names as they
found them.
It is very hard to distinguish some of the names.
Carley, Carl (?)
Listed are:
Abraham
Arthur
Bart'n
Barthow
Bartholomew
Bernard
Elijah (my ancestor)
Francis
Hannah
Isaiah
James
Thomas
There is a notation of three letters (I cannot figure them out but there is a QX after
them. I checked that notation and is says 1783 Dec. 25 Sorel provision list. 29 names
& children.
From the 1851 Census of Hallowell Township (Enumeration district 2)
page 94: Elijah Carley is listed--85
From the 1861 Census he is listed as--95. That would make him born in 1866. (should
read 1766)
Colonel Bartholomew Carley died on October 3rd, 1844 in his 87th year: That would make
him born in 1757. And as I told you before it says in his death notice that he was a
native of Nobletown, or Hillsdale, County of Albany, New York. He came to what is now
Canada by way of St. John's, Quebec in 1781.
Also I see a notation by my Uncle Cecil when he was doing his own research in the
1950's in Schnectady, New York (prior to 1776) there were seven (7) brothers and one
(1) sister.
Just as an aside my Grandfather Philip Francis Carley (born in 1859) had an older brother
Elijah Wesley who was born June 22nd, 1844 and he had one son who was named Albert A.
Carley born August 21st, 1871 who died on March 4th, 1963. The names seem to follow
through. There seems to be a connection somewhere.
Later.

Joseph's sons mentioned in Fran's list. Joseph had brothers John (my ancestor);
Abraham b 1711, m. Susannah Brookins and they lived in Hillsdale, Columbia Co., NY (Joseph
lived a short distance away from Abraham)and who was a a Green Mountain Boy and lived
briefly in VT with severah of his wife's brothers; James; William, Jr; and Job. All
of the children born of William and Mary Bowden Carley were baptised in groups of 2s by a
cousin of Capt. Henry's - Bartholomew Carley of Marlborough, MA who was an unordained
minister at Marlborough - William's children have mistakenly been attributed to
Bartholomew but Bartholomew had children of his own who bore the same names and who were
older than those of William and Mary's.
You have to remember that there were 3 William Carley/Kerly/Kerleys at Sudbury - founded
when all 3 lived there and the youngest William, b. 1633 is usually ignored as the senior
William, b. 1602 and his nephew/cousin William, b.1621 were founders of Sudbury, Lancaster
and Marlborough, MA between the years 1640 to 167?, along with the senior's son, Capt.
Henry, b. 1632. The youngest William (1633) and wife Jane eventually moved into
Lexington, MA where they died and are buried 1719 - 21.
