I am reposting enquiries regarding my granduncle and grandaunt, two
members of my family whom I cannot trace after 1881
My great grandmother, Jane CARL(E)TON b 1847 Gill House, Ormside, WES,
ENG d/o Christopher CARLTON and Jane ALLON had two illegitimate children
before she married my great grandfather, William PAYNE in 1874 Appleton,
WES, ENG
William Alan CARL(E)TON b 1867 Scattergate, Appleby, WES, ENG. I have
found him in the 1881 census as William PAYNE, (labourer) living with
his mother and step-father at 1 Blank Lane, Crosscanonby, CUM, ENG. The
1881 census gives his place of birth as WES, ENG
Mary Ann CARL(E)TON b 1871 Willows, Bolton, Morland, WES, ENG. I have
also found her in the 1881 census as Mary PAYNE (scholar) also living
with her mother and step-father at 1 Blank Lane, Crosscanonby, CUM, ENG.
The 1881 census gives her place of birth as Maryport, Cumberland, ENG
which does not agree with her birth registration.
After 1881 they seem to have disappeared - Mary Ann could have married
with a subsequent change of her surname but I don't know whether they
went under the name PAYNE or CARL(E)TON after 1881
