I'm wondering if there are any Carleton/Carlton males out there who
have done y-chromosome genetic testing? I can take my Carlton line
(which was spelled Carleton until the 1800's) back to about the time
of the American Revolution, but hit a brick wall there. There are
competing versions of who my ancestors were before then. I've done
genetic testing through Family Tree DNA (but it could be done through
any of a number of companies) and can tell you that my y-chomosome
(which is passed down relatively unchanged from male to male)
indicates haplogroup I1, and more specifically my subclade is AS8.
The AS8 designation describes very, very few people and it would be
interesting to know of any Carleton/Carlton males who match that and
who have good documentation of their Carleton line going back beyond
the 1800's. Incidentally, the AS8 genetic subclade traces all they
way back 2000 years ago to Saxons or pre-Saxons living near the area
of Pomerania in what is now northern Germany!
. At some point I believe my ancient ancestors made their way to
Great Britain where they may have lived for 1,000 years or so before
coming to the U.S. I would love to know of any I1-AS8
Carleton/Carlton males out there, especially those who can trace back
to early American settlers. My brick wall is with Thomas Carleton (or
possibly William Thomas Carleton) who certainly died in Duplin
County, NC in 1795 and who may have been born in Chester County,
Pennsylvania.
