Thanks for the link, Ron. My connection to the Carletons comes via T.J. Newcomb &
Frinda Goodell in your database. The problem comes with Samuel Ayer and Mary Carleton (ID:
I16963). I show them marrying in Boxford in 1761, then moving to Weare, NH and ending in
St. Johnsbury, VT and having 14 children along the way. The problem is that there were at
least two Samuel Ayers, of the correct age, in the area. I've seen presentations
having either marrying Mary Carleton. I've also seen no evidence that ties the Mary
Carleton who married Samuel Ayer to any particular parents (e.g. will mentioning Mary
Ayer) and her birth was not recorded. I've also seen nothing showing them moving from
Boxford to St. Johnsbury and having 14 children between the altar and the grave.
That's all been pieced together from various fragmented sources. I may want to take a
look at that 1940 NEHGR next time I get to a library that has it.
