Massachusetts Historical Society Winthrop Papers 1638-1645, Volume IV (Boston:
Massachusetts Historical Society, 1944).
Edward left sometime in late September or October 1639, for his home in England. It is not
clear why Edward needed to leave his family for a time and return to England. A possible
explanation is his brother Thomas, who died while attempting to sail to New England
sometime in May of 1639, and his mother who was living in 1639 may have been in poor
health or unable to take care of the Carlton holdings in England. She did have another
son, William, who was not of age at that time. Because of this Edward took it upon himself
to make haste for England and take care of family matters. He returned to New England
sometime around August 1642 (based on the birth date of his first daughter, Mary).
