I am trying to locate any living descendants of my paternal grandfather's sister,
maiden name Mildred Beatrice Shaw, b. September 28, 1900 in Webb's Mill, Casco,
Cumberland, Maine to Elmer Chester and Lucy Churchill (Edwards) Shaw. She married Alton
J. Carleton of Auburn, Maine on August 26, 1918. He was born about March of 1893, I
believe to Robert and Margaret Briggs Carleton, probably in Auburn, Androscoggin, Maine.
I have located a death archive record listing a Mildred B. Carleton for March 2, 1972
dying in Lewiston, Maine at the age of 71 years. This fits. Mildred and Alton had two
children - Alton, Jr., b. about 1925 and Jean, b. about November of 1927. I already knew
of the marriage and children; the 1930 Census has confirmed approximate dates. They were
living in Auburn, Maine at that time. A member of my family believes that when she saw
Jean during the 1950's, her family was then living in Skowhegan, Maine. Jean
Carleton, (if the Maine Marriage Archives!
haven't failed me, and this is yet to be confirmed), married a man named Harold B.
Hallock March 14, 1950, again, probably in Auburn. If I have located the correct family
in the 1930 Census, Harold was born about 1925; his mother's name was Velma. While
reviewing information in the Maine Marriage Archives, another marriage quite by chance
caught my attention - A "Carleton H. Hallock" of Auburn, Maine was married
August 16, 1986. I found it more than interesting that his first name was Jean's
maiden name, and the middle initial "H" could possibly stand for
"Harold". I am wondering if this man is a son of Jean and Harold Hallock, or if
using very short generations, perhaps a grandson. If any of this information sounds or
is familiar to anyone, or if you can confirm or refute any of it, please contact me.
Thank you, Mary
