My apologies -- I still haven't made it back yet. (I'm looking to buy a new
camera!)
I did find some GREAT information online -- along with documents that I will be posting
soon. (Actual typed info.) It covers so many of the Prestons, Kniffens & Carletons.
This will also take you back to 1690 for your tree! (The Sedgwick's married into the
Preston's)
An example;
IRA PRESTON, 8th. child of Samuel and Lucy (Johnson) Preston, was born March 9, 1785, at
Wallingford, Conn., and died Aug. 20, 1872, at Prestonville, Mich. He married in 1810,
Deborah Goff, of Rush, Monroe Co., N. Y., born Feb. 11, 1793, daughter of Charles Goff, a
Rev. Soldier. She died Jan. 3, 1885.
They lived at Rush, N. Y., until 1827, when they removed to Macomb County, Mich., where
they were pioneers in the lumber business. The Preston saw mill is said to have been the
first to cut white pine lumber in Michigan. This family has always been noted for its
thrift, economy and integrity. Coming to Michigan when it was but a wilderness, they had
to undergo many perils and privations unknown to later generations. By strict attention to
business nearly all of the older Prestons acquired a competence, which has been passed on
to later generations. The children of Ira and Deborah Preston were:
1. Emily Preston, b. June 4, 1813.
2. George Washington Preston, b. May 7, 1815.
3. Riley Sedgwick Preston, b. Apr. 20, 1820.
4. Manerva (Minerva) Preston, b. Aug. 22, 1822,
5. Ira Luman Preston, b. Feb. 21, 1825.
6. Eliza Ann Preston, b. Aug. 30, 1829.
7. Judge Sidney Preston, b. Jan. 16, 1831.
Emily married into the Kniffen's
Manerva married into the Goff's
I was very very impressed with the info I found and will repost on my site as soon as I
get the time. This will, I'm sure, get me back to the cemetery sooner than later for
more photos! (I only wish I could find information like this on my own family!!
