Very interesting. My Carleton's waffled between Carlton & Carleton up until
about 1861. Then two of them, Daniel Carl[e]ton and William Carl[e]ton (both
born in Ireland, 1820-1830, possibly Cavan or Derry areas; emigrated to
Newark, NJ in late 1850s) inexplicably changed their respective family names
to CARROLTON around 1861.
William's family kept the new rendering from then on. Daniel
Carlton/Carleton/Carrolton waffled between the variations on censuses up
until 1900 when the Carrolton name finally stuck for good.
Daniel Carlton, a hatter, from whom I descend, married Margaret Hart (b.
1820-1830 IRE) in Newark, NJ and raised their six children there.
