Hi, Sally --
I can't give you a lot of information. I am not very proud of my
information although I have spent many hours on it. Supposedly the line can be traced
to Charlemagne. I believe that my Carleton line goes like this:
Thomas (1) Carleton married Mable Carlisle
Lancelot (1) Carleton b cir 1550, M Eleanor Kirkby
Lancelot (2) Carleton b 1620, m Mary Irvine
Lancelot (3) Carleton b cir 1648 , d cir 1693. (will proved in Dublin in
1695) m Mary Cathcart
Christopher Carleton b 1683, d 1738 at Strabane, Co Tyrone, Ireland m
Katherine Ball
Their children:
Conally, m. 1) Alexander Crawford and 2) Sir Patrick King
Sir Guy (Lord Dorchester) b. Sept 3, 1724, Stravane Co. Tyrone, N.
Ireland, m Lady Maria Howard
Capt. William, b ca 1720 Newry, Co. Down, N. Ireland, m "Miss Devon"
who d ca 1753
Lt. Gov. Thomas, b 1732 (or 1735), Newry, Co. Down, N. Ireland
Katherine
Lt. Lancelot (4) d 1741 (in Jamaica?)
Anne m John Rotton in 1756
I have found very little on Capt. William Carleton (above) He is said to
have married "Miss Devon" and died
at sea cir 1753-1765. His children were:
A daughter who m Mr. Starling
Col. Christopher, b 1742/49, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, Scotland,
d June 14, 1787Quebec
m Lady Anne Howard (sister of Lady Maria Howard, the wife of Sir Guy
Carleton)
William
I'm sorry not to give you references. Most of this information was obtained
from various internet sites and history books. I cannot even be positive
that this Col. Christopher is my ancestor. The reason I chose William as the
brother of Sir Guy Carleton from whom we are descended was that I was able to
eliminate the other brothers and William was the only possible one left.. The
one thing that I have proof for is the death of Col. Christopher on June 14,
2787 in Quebec and of his marriage -- but I cannot get further information
from Quebec.
"Carleton's Raid" by Ida H. and Paul A. Washington says that he was
orphaned in 1753 at the age of 4 when his parents were drowned at sea. That book
contains a very graphic account of a portion of his life which is very
interesting. You might want to try to get a copy of that book thru inter-library
loan if your library doesn't have it. I believe I found it at the Princeton
Library when I visited my grandson out there several years ago.
I probably told you that my grandmother said that her mother (Margaret
Pierce Carleton) was a "niece of Sir Guy Carleton" (and she gave all of her
daughters the second name of Carleton) I keep wondering if she was a "niece"
or a
"grand niece".
That story went that Margaret Pierce (whose mother's first name may have been
Rebecca) married "Guy" (or as some descendants say his name was
"John"
Carleton. Their daughter, Margaret Pierce Carleton married Henry Hoblitzell, Sr.
May 7, 1812 in Cumberland, Allegany Co., MD. They are my gr gr grandparents.
It's been ages since I worked on the Carleton family and I have about given
up on it. Hopefully, what I have told you is helpful and will encourage you
go pursue your search on the family. If you want a copy of my Carleton
descendant's chart, please give me your home address and I'll send you a copy.
If
you ever find anything to tie in with my line, I will greatly appreciate it
if you will let me know.
Happy hunting
Florence Norback!
