1. ROBERT E.1 CARLTON was born in 1812 at Charlestown, Suffolk County,
Massachusetts. He and Maria E. Brown filed marriage intention on 3 October 1839 at
Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, daughter of John Brown and Alice Jennings.
On Sunday 27 October 1839 Robert married Maria E. Brown age 18, daughter of John
Brown and Alice Jennings, at Boxford, Essex County, Massachusetts. He died on Tuesday 26
October 1880 at Lawrence, Essex County, Massachusetts. He was buried at West Boxford,
Essex County, Massachusetts.
He was a carpenter. He was enumerated as the head of household along with his wife,
Maria in the U.S. federal census enumeration on 22 August 1850 at Andover, Essex County,
Massachusetts. Mary Brown, Harriet B. Carlton, George E. Carlton, Alonzo Bancroft Brown
Carleton, and Rebecca White Carlton were in Robert's household on this census. He
was enumerated as the head of household along with his wife, Maria in the 1860 U.S.
federal census enumeration on 13 June 1860 at Boxford, Essex County, Massachusetts. George
E. Carlton, Alonzo Bancroft Brown Carleton, Rebecca White Carlton, Ella Marie Carleton,

left a will on 11 September 1880;
In the name of God, Amen. I Robert E. Carlton of Lawrence, County of Essex and
Commonwealth of Massachusetts, being in good bodily health and of sound and disposing mind
and memory calling to mind the uncertainty of human life, and being desirous of settling
my worldly affairs, and directing how the estates with which it has pleased God to bless
me, shall be disposed of after my decease, while I have strength and capacity so to do, do
make and publish this my last will and testament. And, first, I commend my immortal being
to Him who gave it, and my body to the earth, to be buried with little expense by my
Executors hereinafter named.
And as to my worldly estates, and all the property, seal personal or mixed, of which I
shall die seized and possessed, or to which I shall be entitled at the time of my decease,
I devise bequeath and dispose thereof in the manner following, to wit
First My will is, that all my just debts and funeral charges shall, by my executors
hereinafter named, be paid out of my estate as soon, after my decease as shall by them be
found convenient. Second I give, devise, and bequeath to my daughters Ella Maria Carlton
and Alice J. Carlton all of my personal property, to have and to hold the same to them and
their assigns forever. I also give to their use, improvement and income of all my Real
Estate situate in said Lawrence to have and to hold the same to them for and during their
natural lives. Third I give and bequeath to my Granddaughters Blanch Mable Smith and
Nellie Francis Carlton five dollars to each of them to be paid to them within one year
after my decease. Fourth I give, devise and bequeath to my children Daniel B. Carlton,
John A. Carlton, Alonzo B. Carlton, Rebecca W. Briggs and Nancy E. Weeks, one sixth part
of my Real Estate to each and to my Grand children George F. Butler, Robert E. Butler,
Charles Butler and Add!
a F. Butler, children of David and Harriet B. Butler one sixth part of my Real Estate
remaining after the decease of said Ella Maria and Allice J. Carlton to them and their use
and behoof forever. Fifth I do nominate and appoint my said son and daughter John A.
Carlton and Alice J. Carlton to be the Executors of this my last will and Testaªment and
that said Executors shall not furnish bonds.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the Eleventh day of September in
the year of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and Eighty. Signed, sealed and declared by
the above named Robert E. Carlton to be his last will and testament, in the presence of
us, who at his request, and in his presence have subscribed our names as witnesses
thereto: Walter Wheelock Charles Fredrick Roberts James Hazen Jr. all of said Lawrence
aforesaid
Be it known that I Robert E. Carlton make this a Codicil to my last will and testament.
That the Executors of my said will shall have the power to sell said Real Estate at any
time when they the Executors may deem it advisable and it is my will that the remaining
proceeds of said sale after the decease of the said Ella Maria and Alice J. Carlton shall
be given to the said children named in my said will in item Fourth.
In witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this Eleventh day of September in the year
of our Lord one thousand Eight hundred and Eighty. Robert E. Carleton

MARIA E. BROWN was born on Tuesday 1 May 1821 at Boxford, Essex County,
Massachusetts.

He was a shoe maker. He appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Boxford, Essex County,
Massachusetts, in the household of his parents Robert E. Carlton and Maria E. Brown.
5. iv. REBECCA WHITE CARLTON was born on Monday 26 April 1847 at Andover, Essex County,
Massachusetts.
On Wednesday 23 August 1871 at age 24 Rebecca married David M. Briggs at
Massachusetts. She died in February 1915 at Oakland, California, at age 67.
