Dear Harold,
When you find this information, I would like to be on your mailing list for it.
I am a descendant of one of Gen. James Carle's sisters. Her name was Lodicia
Carle, and she married my great-grandfather, Robert Bartlett. I can put you in
touch with another direct descendant of the Carle family, who carries the Carle
name, and he is very interested in the military history. Just let me know.
Meanwhile, I will try to find out if he has an e-mail address.

Karl,
At the moment I can't find the information I had xeroxed from "Brevet
Brigadier Generals in Blue" at the local (Manassas, VA) library concerning
Brevet Brig.Gen. of Volunteers James Carle. The following is brief summary
of the facts I recall. James Carle who was born in NY and is buried in NY
became a Lt. and later a Captain in a PA Infantry Regiment. At Bristow (a
few miles from Manassas) although generally the Confederates had the worst
day, Carle's regiment was pinned down crossing a small stream. After all of
the senior officers were killed or wounded along with a good portion of the
troops, Carle was credited with saving what was left of the regiment. He
was soon given command of a new PA Infantry regiment and later a brigade.
He was captured by the Confederates and following his release from
Andersonville was promoted to Brevet Brig.Gen. of Volunteers. The book also
has a head and shoulders picture of him (possibly the same picture). So far
I've found no info on where and when he was born in NY state or specifically
was he one of the James Carles from the Columbia/Dutchess Co. Area.
