Karl,
I've noticed similar phenomena several other places in the family. It
seemed especially pronounced amongst the early Hahn group and their
Bullinger/Bollinger traveling companions/in-laws. A number of these
German-speaking families appear to have traveled in tandem from the
Palatinate (and possibly earlier from the Zurich area) to the Pennsylvania
frontier, then the NC frontier around Hickory, then when the U.S. government
started to seem to oppressive to Missouri while it was still Spanish
territory. The allied clans do not APPEAR to have participated in my
group's Hahn foray into SW Illinois. I wonder though whether SOME of the
Texas Hahns and Bollingers are descended from the Missouri colony rather
than 19th Century arrivals from Europe.
I was a bit surprised to find that my father's uncle by marriage Owen Savage
was not the first in his family to marry one of the Martin girls. The trail
of Savages and Martins from IL thru TN and eastward seemed to have his
ancestors marrying Martins as often as not. In similar fashion considering
Virginia's many burned or otherwise missing and fragmentary records my most
solid clue on the origin of my Mullen group who show up in Loudoun Co.
(ca.1800 and listed on various censuses as born in VA) is association with
another family who appear about the same time and the fact that the same 2
names were associated in Caroline Co. (some distance SSE) in the late
1700's).

Harold,
That's encouraging news. I assume you've contacted the page owner. Let
us know if there are more developments.
The inference regarding the Hempstead/Duchess County connection is
one I've wondered about in the more general case. That is, I've noticed
that
often
two or more families seem to move at the same time from one area to another
leading me to wonder about the contributing cause(s), especially if there
is
nothing
obvious such as an inter-marriage or two. I assume that news from
returning
travelers about the "goldina medina" just over the mountain
and the
exigencies
of travel in those times are among the prominent causes of such a
"mass"
re-location.
