Dear List Members:
I have been doing research about Ephraim and Ruth (Higgins) CARLE's son
Joseph for better than three years. I recently came upon an Ancestral file
Joseph CARLE (AFN:MQ71-5V) that runs contrary to the facts I have located
about Joseph, son of Ephraim and Ruth.
I am writing about Joseph the SON of Ephraim and Ruth, not a grandson or
great grandson by that name. The last time I posted information, several
people made inquiries back about facts that I have associated with
grandchildren.
Were it not that most of the information in the ancestral file seemed
incorrect, I would leave well enough alone.
In the ancestral file, Joseph b. probably 15 yrs too late; no wife is
reported; one child is reported b. almost 50 years after Joseph's demise.
Further, while four children whose names I've not seen before are listed as
children, there is not a son "Dirick" reported. The file lists a ch. b. at NJ
in 1787, when Joseph and wife Maria are said to have been in Elizabeth Twp.,
Allegheny Co., PA by 1786.
Help me if you can please. Does anyone know any of the submitters. It would
be a bless to be able to see proof or be able to correct that file. --BJ
Dear BJ,
I am extremely grateful to the LDS Church for sharing its files. However,
I think as you that we cannot assume they are correct. I knew the ancestral
files were contributed by church members, but I had read that the IGI files
were supposed to have been taken from actual documents, and would be
accurate. That is not totally true.
On another list a researcher wrote that on the microfiche source number,
if the third digit was 5 or higher, the record was taken from actual
documents. If it is 4 or less that record was contributed by a church member.
I don't know how accurate that statement is, and I have no further
information available to me to prove or disprove it. I simply share it as I
read it.
I have been trying to test it on information that I know for sure, and so
far it seems correct. Three IGI Files had one person with the same parents
and same birth date being born in 3 different places - in two different
states! The one that I think is accurate was the only one of the 3 to pass
the test.
The information at this site might also help to determine if information
is accurate. This was sent from another ROOTS-L list.
