The beginning of the Kingdom of Netherlands, the ancestral home of the
Carle Family,
lay in the Eighty Years War (1568-1648), a struggle for independence from
Spain.
The family name Carle is ultimately of French provenance and is
classified as being
of personal name origin. According to scholars, the "oldest and most
pervasive type
of surname is that derived from a given name". Such family names may be
derived from a parental first name
or from the font of the grandfather or indeed a more remote ancestor of the
original bearer of
the surname. With regard to the family name Carle, the appellation
originated as a French rendering
of the old Germanic personal name "Karl", which was in turn derived from the
Old High German
word "karal", which denoted a free man. The popularity of the name and the
advent of
cognates in other languages (such as "Charles", "Carlo" and
"Carlos") may be
attributed to the
renown of the Frankish emperor Karl the Great, better known as Charlemagne.
Many of the French surnames which are widely found in Holland were
introduced to that country
by Huguenots(French Protestants) who sought refuge there from religious
persecution
in their native land.
