I'm still hoping eventually to learn the parentage of Mercy/ Marcy
Carle, who married John Woodruff on 21 Sep 1708.
Rev. Nathaniel Huntting, the pastor at Easthampton, Long Island,
recorded the marriage of John Woodruff "of Elizabethtown" (now
Elizabeth, NJ) to Mercy Carle "of Easthampton" on 9/21/1708. The
recording of the marriage in Huntting's book suggests that he
performed the ceremony at Easthampton, though it doesn't actually say
so.
What follows is a mishmash of my notes concerning the Carle family. I
am in the dark as to which Carle line produced Mercy, and I have too
few records of each line to hazard even a guess about the identities
of Mercy's parents. I hope more material will turn up, but the
chances of that may not be very good. I am interested in all data
that may have a bearing on any Carles of Easthampton before 1708, and
also any Carles living in NJ before 1750, who may have been Mercy's
near relatives.
° 63 acres of land were surveyed for a Timothy Carle in Piscataway,
NJ on 3/9/1677, and patented to him on 7/30/1678 (Monette, "First
Settlers of Woodbridge and Piscataway," p. 352, 355).
° The American Genealogical-Biographical Index lists a single mention
of a Mercy Carle of NJ, born 167?, in all the thousands of indexed
source books and periodicals. That mention supposedly occurred in the
Boston Transcript genealogical column Nov. 11, 1914. I have examined
the cited column on microfiche and the reference simply isn't there:
the indexer must have made a typo. If Mercy Carle's name did appear
in a Transcript column (and it must have, or why would any such
reference be indexed in AGBI?), I don't know how to track it down
other than by guessing, based on the incorrect entry, what typos the
indexer might have made and laboriously investigating each
possibility. That's more work than I want to take on.
° C. N. Woodruff speculated that Mercy Carle was the sister of a
Jonas Carle of Elizabethtown. I have not yet followed that lead.
Hatfield's Elizabeth makes no mention of a Jonas Carle. The NJ IGI
contains no mention of Mercy Carle except her marriage to John
Woodruff. There is a Family Registry listing (FRI 235741) for an
Elizabeth Carle, daughter of Ephraim Carle. Was she related to Mercy?
°I have checked all indices of NY Gen. & Biog. Record, vols 1-121.
The only Carle family mentions are noted below.
° In NYGBR, July 1934, on p. 251 is an abstract of the will of Thomas
Carle of Hempstead, dated 10/27/1708, proved 5/19/1709. It names
eldest son Thomas, younger sons Jonas and Jacob, daus. Desire, Phoebe
and Elizabeth, and wife Elizabeth, co-exr. with Timothy Halstead and
James Sering. Was Mercy Carle his granddaughter?
° The Hempstead, LI Census of 1698 lists the following Carles: John,
Sarah, Sarah, John Jr., Jacob, Mary, Timothi Jr., Thomas, Thomas, and
Elizabeth. [NYGBR 45: 60, 61, 65]. In light of the will just
mentioned, the two Thomases in this census seem likely to have been
father and son.
° In NYGBR, July 1989, p. 147, it is mentioned in passing that
"Thomas Carle married Sarah, daughter of Jonas Halstead," and that
"Thomas Carle, the son-in-law of Jonas Halstead, purchased a house
and land in Hempstead on 27 February 1656" It goes on to say that
"Sarah (Halstead) Carle always signed with her mark."
° Was the wife Elizabeth, who was named in Thomas Carle's will, his
second wife, or was this testator the SON of Thomas and Sarah
Halstead Carle? Either seems plausible in the absence of other
information.
° The note about Sarah signing with her mark suggests that there are
some extant records signed by Thomas and Sarah, which might be useful
if I can find them. Then there are the two unidentified Johns, a
Mary, and the extra Sarah, all mentioned in the census, to be pursued.
° No Carles at all appear in Josephine C. Frost's "Cemetery
Inscriptions from Hempstead, L.I." (1904) or in her "Cemetery
Inscriptions from St. George's Church" (1912).
° "The Lineal Ancestors of Susan Mulford Cory" reports, on p. 46-7,
that Judge John Mulford had "for several years" a white servant named
John Kirle, which name "years afterwards, was changed to 'Carle'." In
gratitude for Kirle's faithful service, Mulford gave him on 1/13/1677
six acres of land in East Hampton. The author does not say what
became of Kirle's descendants, if he had any. A closer examination
of Long Island records might reveal whether this Kirle was related to
the Hempstead Carles.
° A Jonas Carle of Elizabethtown, NJ died before 1/20/1732-3, when
his widow Hannah petitioned to have her father, Johannis Vanwinkle,
appointed administrator on the estate of her late husband. Her
request was granted 1/31/1732-3. It seems likely that this Jonas was
the son of Thomas Carle and his wife Sarah Halstead, d/o Jonas
Halstead.
° There are numerous references to Abiall Carle between 1678 and
1717, John Carle between 1678 and 1717, Recompense Carle between 1708
and 1711, and to "Widow Carle" in 1698 and 1713, in the East Hampton

(c. 1686-1761), colonial governor of NY, m. Anne Carle. No other
information is given about her.
