Thanks for your reply. I only have available to me, some family history
gleaned about 20 years ago and some information from the US Census records
up to 1880. After that the family may have died out or moved from
Circleville. My grandmother, Mary Agnes Carle Glackin was Will's sister.
My mother always referred to her uncles as Jake, Joe, Will and Theo. I
think that Will was born in this country, the rest in Alsace-Lorraine while
under French rule. I haven't a clue as to middle initials or names.

My great grandfather was William Henry Carl. I'm not sure who his father
was. I strongly believe his father was also a William.
What kind of info are you looking for?

I'm having a small problem with my notebook. At times it seems to have a
mind of it's own. So, if you received an incomplete message, I apologize.
I do need a look up for Circleville. As far as I know, they lived and died
there after immigrating from France. I've been able to trace some of them
through census records; but I was hoping to get more local data.
Did any of your ancestors have the same names as in my list?

I am looking for information on Joseph Carle and his family. His daughter
Mary Agnes is my grandmother. There were 4 sons, Joseph, Jacob, Will and
Theo. I have census data up to about 1890. I need the boy's descendants.
Any help or source would be appreciated. They left the Alsace-Lorraine area
sometime after the Franco-Prussian War. Three of the boys could have been
conscripted into the German army after France lost the war. They settled in
Circleville, Ohio. Most of the family is buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Any history would be appreciated. Thank you

Thank You for the spellings of Our Family Name. I agree with you on the
many ways of spelling it. Some of my family "still" think it should be
"Carroll". But I have found it "Carl" & "Carle" in the family Bible, land
records, & war of 1812 records. As well as meeting others who have their
name spelled "Carle". All members of the "same" family. As the Historian of
"Our" "Carroll Carle" family & Pres. this year. I will be leaving for Oregon
& the "Carroll Carle Clan" Reunion. The Reunion is 25th of July, in
Lebanon,Linn, Oregon. At the River Park. The web page for the Reunion is:

I agree and for that reason we should certainly encourage folks to decide on
the basis of their own knowledge and research whether this would be a useful
list for their attention and postings.
The CARL/CARLL hyperlinks (if that is what Rootsweb decides to use for the
so-called CARLE Cluster) reflect what appear to be the most obvious variants
(especially as one reads census lists, passenger lists, and land records) since
they are "alphabetical neighbors" as well as having known historical linkages.

Yes, my family's surname "CARLE" definitely traces back to their
ancestors who used the "CARLL" spelling. I didn't know there were 48
other variants, but when the spelling changes within one line, I don't
know of any honest way to oust certain members of the line!

Lura,
We have a CARROLL on this list - the spelling change from CARLE took place when
a New Jersey accent met an Oregonian record-keeper. Isn't that the way it
went, Lola?
But, even though Lola is a "two-L" Carroll and you are seeking a "one-L"
Carrol, she may have something to share with you. In fact, I considered asking
to include the CARROLL surname here for that reason but I found there was
already a Rootsweb CARROLL-L mailing list, so that was out.
Good to hear from you. I suggest you plan to post here from time to time so
those who may subscribe in the future will get a look, too.

Karl and All,
I intentionally waited until CARLs, CARLLs, AND CARLEs had a chance to
express their opinion. As a newcomer to the list I haven't posted, because I
am looking for neither of the above surnames.
I am trying to find ancesters for my gggrandparents Alexander CARRELL/
CARROL/?? and Lucy ROYAL/RYAL who married in Duplin County, NC on April 7,
1783. By time for the 1790 census the area where they lived around Six Runs
Creek near Turkey, NC had become Sampson County. The only clue is that a
Demcy Carrel co-signed Alexander's marriage bond. Alexander also bought some
land from Demcy Carroll and his wife Martha. Demcy Carrel, Edmund Carrel, and
Manson Carrel were witnesses when Alexander later sold land. I have found
information that a Dempsey Carroll lived in Westmoreland Co., VA prior to
this time, but I have found no way of linking him to Sampson Co, NC.
I have learned that names are spelled the way the clerk or census taker
hears it and the way his previous knowledge tells him that name is spelled.
These early settlers spoke many languages and dialects. Many did not know
how to write their name in their own language, much less in the strange
languages they now had around them. We sometimes forget that English was not
spoken by all who came from even the UK, and some dialects probably weren't
written at all. If they were able to understand when some clerk told them
that CARLE, CARROL, CARL, CORREL, CURLE, or CARRELL was the English spelling
for KEHRL, how would they know the difference?
Personally, I wish we had lists divided by the soundex code. I belive we
would find our Ancestors much faster.
