Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
All,
This is an extract of the CARLE entries in one of the GED files I've
collected. For reference it's
file number 10347. Maybe it will find a home with someone here.

All,
I am beginning to set up a gallery of photos of unidentified people who are
"thought-to-be" CARLEs on the server space provided by my ISP as a bene for
its subscribers. If you have scans of photos of folks you think might be
CARLEs that you would
like to appear in this gallery, send them to me at karlh(a)concentric.net
(please, not to the CARLE-L
list) as attachments to an email message containing as much as you have in
the way of identification,
the source from which you obtained the scan, the present location of the
original photo, and the like.
I will massage the scans with Photoshop 5.0 as necessary once I receive
them so they may be sent in any
format or size or color.
I will in due course display them in the gallery of CARLE photos on my
auxiliary homepage along with as
much of the identifying information as is provided to me. The hope is that
another CARLE researcher
can identify the photo and provide additional partial or detailed
information about it. Of course, I will
forward to the source of the scan any email I subsequently receive about a
given photo.
When I have several such "unknowns", I'll link our page at
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~kh3500
to this axillary page so it may be easily displayed to any visitor. There
will be no link between the CARLE-L
list and either our homepage or the auxiliary page but I will announce here
when the auxiliary is open
for business with CARLE photos.

I'm sure we all have come upon bits and pieces of CARLE information
that look interesting enough
to save but with no known immediate application to our own CARLEs.
Here is one such
that is in my files. I think it might be useful to share such
"snippets" with others on the list.
Of course, we should be careful to avoid violating copyrights and to
keep the quotation
short enough to be a "snippet" and not a tome.
I believe the following qualifies:
>From History of Luzerne County, PA by H.C. Bradsby, 1893
LYMAN H. CARLE, who has charge of the steam heat at the Ashley
Shops, was
born in Jackson township, this coutny, January 19, 1844. He is a
son of
Miner and Susan (DeReamer) Carle, the former a native of Jackson
township
and of Irish origin, and the latter a native of Ithaca, N.Y., and of
French
and German lineage. Our subject is a grandson of Peter and Mary
(Brown)
Carle, who came to Luzerne county with one of the Connecticut
colonies.
His father, who was a farmer, reared a family of six children
besides our
subject, viz.: Amelia (Mrs. Barney Honeywell Levi), who was fatally
poisoned by mistake while clerking in a drugstore in Kingston; Sarah
(Mrs.
James Honeywell), of Dallas; Austin, who was killed by a train, at
the age
of fourty-four, while acting as foreman on the Factoryville tunnel;
Ira,
who was killed at the age of nineteen at Northumberland, while
acting as
brakeman at the Bloomsburg Railroad; Elizabeth, who died at the age
of
twenty-one, and Emma Delphine, who died in infancy. Our subject
received a
common-school education, and was then successively engaged in
braking,
firing and engineering on the Bloomsburg and Pennsylvania Railroads,
three
years as engineer of a passenger train; he was then engineer on the
Central
Railroad two years, and stationary mine engineer three years, after
which
he had charge of the machinery four years. He was then outside
foreman for
the Hillside Coal & Iron Company at Carbon Hill, Pleasant Valley and
Forest
City for five years, and returned to Ashley in 1880, where he acted
as
engineer in different places for three years, after which he engaged
in the
ice business, which he has since followed. He was also engaged in
contacting for streets, paving and sewers until 1887, when he
accepted his
present position. Mr. Carle was married October 4, 1864, to Miss
Ellen,
daughter of Cornelius and Mary (McLaughlin) Dougherty, natives of
Inishowen, County Donegal, Ireland. The issue of this union has
been
twelve children, viz.: Charles W., a physician, now deceased;
Nellie M.,
who taught several terms of school, and is now a student in the
Philadelphia Dental College; Samuel, who died young; Mary E. (Mrs.
Reuben
Dill); Laura B., a school-teacher at Ashley; Edith; Jennie, who died
young;
Lyman E.; Leona M.; Stanley M.; Austin R., and Olive E. Mrs. Carle
is a
member of the Catholic Church. The father and some of the children
are
members of the Presbyterian Church. He is a member of the F. & A.M.
and
the K. of H. In political preference Mr. Carle is a Democrat, and
has held
the offices of tax collector, councilman and school director in
Ashley
borough. He was in the commissary department of the army of the
Potomac
for one year.
All,
Here is the baseline report of RootsWeb inquiries in February on the
variant spellings of CARLE that I have been searching..
Not as many as I thought there might be but CORLEY is among them, as
Eric remarked.

Karl L.,
I am indeed a member of this list and think you have done a wonderful job
setting it up. I am very impressed at how many people have already
contributed to the list already. You may want to post our line of Carles
starting with Abraham for review by the others. I don't think other members
of the list understand how you are connected into the list as of yet other
than as the listowner. I saw that Richard is already on the list but have
yet to see other members of our previous Carle group check in. Have you
contacted Virginia or Lee to let them in on your new venture. Great job. I
think this will be a very productive venture in the further understanding of
our Carle heritage.
Karl V.
Hello,
First off, thank you Karl for setting up this list.
I am searching for my CARLE ancestors in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, OH.
My grgrGrandfather was Conrad CARLE (CARLEY, KARLE, KARLEY) born 1842 in
unknown, Germany. The 1910 census states he immigrated to US in c1856 and
was naturalized. I beleive this reference is to my ancestor, but no proof,
as he appeared to be traveling alone: >GERMANS TO AMERICA VOL 12, pg
182----CARLE, Conrad, 15, Male, Farmer, destination is Louisville, ship is
Aristides--from Bremen--to New York--arrived on 24 June 1858.<
Conrad married Magdelena NOLL (1847-1901) on 22 July 1965 at St. Boniface
Church, Cincinnati, OH.
Children of Conrad CARLE and Magdelena NOLL are: Margaret; Mary; Andrew
(1867-1934); Conrad Peter (1870-1961); Henry (1872-1952); Magdelena (1879-
1908); Wilomena (1880-1882); Anna (1882_??); Frank (1883-1968); Anton
(1885- 1886); Josephine (1887-??); Victor (1889-??).
Conrad died Sept 1920 and his death certificate states he was a retired
Cigar Maker. His father was listed as William CARLE birthplace Germany, his
mother's name is listed as unknown, her birthplace is also Germany.
Conrad CARLE family was in the Cummunsville area of Cincinnati, Hamilton
County, OH.
Thanks for any help that anyone might have.

Bertha,
Yes, indeed, I'd like to see your Illinois listing of Carles. My
paternal grandparents were Iowans so I've always supposed their
ancestors got there through Illinois though I have nothing to
confirm that.
BTW, my signature isn't a play on words. I started using Karl L
when I began posting to the same places where
my son, Karl Victor Hakmiller, was posting and some confusion
arose as to which of us was whom <g> As it
turns out, it was a happy choice, I believe.

All,
Interesting suggestion. After seeing Eric's post I took a quick
look on Ancestry.com and came up with 581
hits on the CORLEY surname. There were also 72 periodical
publication hits with most being somehow associated
with the states of KY, Ok, SC, TX and WV. I didn't download any of
the associated GED files but now I think I will
check out some of them

Karl:
If the Anne Kirll you mention was, like her husband, Scottish, then "Carl"
or Carle" might have been a pretty good phonetic representation of its
actual pronunciation by a speaker with a thick Scottish burr. I've actually
wondered whether the John Kirle mentioned near the middle of my long first
message to this list was of Scottish origin, but I know nothing more about
him than what appeared in that message.

Just a thought: the exchange of messages quoted below has suggested to me
yet another possible spelling variant: Corley. It had never crossed my mind
until now that Corley and Carle might have anything to do with each other,
but maybe they do. Both are very old surnames in parts of NJ -- more than
old enough to predate any notions of standardized spelling. I've had (and
still have) no reason to look into the Corley family, so I don't know
whether its origins have already been well documented. But any Carle
researcher who finds the variant "Corle" in the records of their geographic
area of interest should perhaps also be checking to see whether any Corleys
appear there.
On the other hand, where both "Corle" and "Corley" appear in local records
but there are lots more Corleys, I'd be inclined to guess that the shorter
spelling was more likely a variant of Corley than of Carle.

Karl-
I have found members of this family on different census sheets spelled
Corle, Carle, and Carl. I know these are the same family, so I now look for
all variant spellings of this name. As with any surname, it probably was
spelled the way the census taker heard it.

Richard,
Good question and, happily, the Rootsweb system is taking care of
business.
The messages are archived for each list by the Rootsweb system
automatically. The archives can be searched
by email. I plan to cover the method of doing that in a post here
but since there aren't all that many messages
yet, I thought that could wait a bit.
One thing to keep in mind when posting, of course, is that the
archiving system picks up surnames (surprise!)
and if a post contains a whole bunch of surnames not related to the
contents of the message, future users who
search on a name will get messages of little use to them mixed in
with the ones that are useful to them.

All,
What is a reasonable criterion for referring to a surname as a
"variant" ? Which came first, I suppose,
would be one.
If so, will the real variant please stand up (see below):
Genealogical and Personal Memorial of Mercer County, New Jersey Vol
1 (I):
Alexander Rickey, born in 1680, the pioneer ancestor of the Rickey
family in a direct
line in this country, was a native of Edinboro, Scotland, and
emigrated to America during
the early part of the eighteenth century (1698). He made his home in
Bucks County,
Pennsylvania, where he was in all probability engaged in
agricultural pursuits.
He married Anne Kirll (now spelled Carl and Carle), daughter of
Thomas and Julia Ann
Kirll, and had one child, John.
