I am descended from the William Carhartt family of Ellsworth, Kansas.
I remember my parents referring to an Aunt May, although I never met her. Other relatives
included Van Earl Danner. I think Van Earl Danner's mother's first name was Ziba.
Arlie Carhartt was my great uncle.
My grandfather, William Henry Carhart legally changed his name to
Carhart ( without the second "t") . He was a wholesale grocery salesman most of
his life, and served as an army officer in the Spanish American War. He married Minnie
Blanche Lockwood- originally of County Cork, Ireland. They had five children, including my
father, William
Henry Carhart,Jr; Dorothy Carhart Patterson, Paul Lockwood Carhart,
Ruth Carhart Putnam, and Arliene Carhart Ulrickson.
My dad also had the name William Henry Carhart(1911-1979). He was a self-employed
dry-cleaner most of his life. He was an expert horseman; serving as a volunteer member of
the Los Angeles Sheriff's mounted posse for several years, before we moved to Oregon.
My mother was Clara Mildred Peterson of McPherson, KS (1909-2004)
She had eight brothers and sisters. She was a registered nurse in her twenties, and a
landscape painter later in life.
My mother's parents were both born in Sweden; Jonas Peterson from Helsingland, Sweden;
and Alfreida Olson Peterson from Varmland, Sweden.
Please let me know of any connections you become aware of.
Sincerely,
Jim Carhart
