Hi. Thanks to the 1911 cenus going on line I've managed to discover my genealogy Holy
Grail - the connection between the two parts of my surname (Carhart-Harris) in Cornwall. I
knew that my great grandfather Leslie Carhart Harris combined his middle (Carhart being an
inherited middle name, which I knew was of Cornish origin) and surname following a
business disagreement in the 1920s, but had not found where the Carhart and Harris
families met. To cut to the chase, I have also visited Carhart in Cornwall, near St
Breock, on the Camel estuary. I found it accidentally on an Ordnance survey map when on
holiday in Tintagel two years ago and had to drive down. Down a dusty track I stopped at
the local pub the Quarryman and enquired about Carhart. The barman/landlord told me he
lived at Carhart cottage. There was also Carhart farmhouse, which I took a look at. The
wall of the barn dates to medieval times, I was told. Apparently a lot of Carharts have
visited. I was expecting a vill!
age but it's really no more than a farm on an old Celtic settlement overlooking the
estuary. I was also informed that my pronunciation of Carhart, with the accent on the
'Car', was wrong. Cornish people accentuate the last syllable, hence
'CarHART'. Apparently my granddad (born in London) pronounced it
'CaRRart'. That's another thread, however...
