Dear Amy -
My great grandfather was David Cargill II, born in Canada 29 Feb. 1825 who, with his
father, David Cargill the first, came from Malandobar Farm, Bush Mills, Antrim Co.,
Ireland. This David Cargill the first was the son of James Cargill. This James Cargill
was married twice, the first time to ( I believe) Isabella Shaw and had two children:
David the first and his brother James Cargill. They settled in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
I'm not sure if David and James' father, James, came to Canada or not. From what
my mother told me, the father, James, married a second time and had several more children:
Elizabeth, William, Henry, Hugh, James, Mary Jane, and Mattie.. Believe they came to the
states rather than Canada. Some settled around Lapeer and one in Marlette, Michigan.
There are so many Cargills by the name of James, David, and Henry that I find it very
confusing. My David Cargill II lost his land in Canada so answered the last call for
volunteers in the Union Army so he would be able to get a homestead in the States after
the war. David and his wife, Agnes Emerson, and their eight children settled in Weare
Township, Oceana County, Michigan.
Could this James, the brother of David I, be the brother who went to Canada, left his
first wife and returned to Ireland - married again and had a family there, then returned
to Canada where he died in 1857? My husband and I visited the library in Guelph several
years ago on our way to his family reunion in Lindsay. The people at the library were
very helpful.
These people may not have any connection to your Cargills. Good luck in your research.
