Lorna and Amy: I also have many David, James and Henry Cargills in my line.
My line, though, came from New York. The earliest "traced" Cargill I have is
John Cargill born about 1730 in New York. John and his brother, James were
butchers on Pecks Slip in New York in 1754. John married Phebe Stryker on
December 15, 1752. They had a son HENRY Cargill b. May 17, 1757, NY d.
October 14, 1792, CT. Henry married Rachel Sherwood. (Henry was a
Revolutionary soldier in Hay's Regiment, Orange County, NY.) Henry & Rachel
had a son JAMES Cargill, b. October 14, 1792, Connecticut; d. January 04,
1880. James married Phebe Bross May 09, 1813 in Carmel, New York. James &
Phebe had a son HENRY Cargill, b. October 27, 1815, Phillipstown, Dutchess
Co., Ny; d. April 07, 1894, Gailsburg, Knox, Illinois. Henry married Susan
Caroline Townsend December 24, 1836 in Coldsprings, Putnam, New York. Henry &
Susan's son, DAVID Elmer Cargill, b. August 04, 1849, Coldspring, Putnam
County, Ny; d. December 31, 1926, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA. married Sarah
Jane Wallace December 30, 1869 in Coldbrook Twp, Warren County, Illinois.
Their daughter, Mary Caroline Cargill, b. January 17, 1876, Gailsburg,
Knox, Illinois; d. November 05, 1956, Pendleton, Umatilla, Oregon. married
Aleri Eugene McCulley September 16, 1897 in Middle Cold Springs, Oregon.
Aleri and Mary had a son, Ralph Eugene McCulley (my grandfather). The bible
and will of Henry Cargill is on genforum. (I placed it there). I also have
other children of all of the above, but just placed my direct line. Hope
this helps someone. Dawnee Phay McCulley
