Hello Roger,
Did you ever publish? I am working on a reprint of Cargill/Cargile/Cargal of
the South and Southwest and hope to get it to the printers in a month or so.
Right now I'm at the proofreading stage. Then I'll index. I have over 200
orders.

Pete,
You have the Cargill families mixed up. James Cargill, b. Aghadowey
(Derry) North
Ireland, 1687, d. Mendon MA, Oct 1753, m.Pawtuxet RI, 1725,
Phebe Smith of Warwick (Kent) RI, b. 05 Dec 1699, d. South Kingstown RI,
1738 were the parents of Benjamin Cargill, b. South Kingstown RI, 11 Apr
1737.
James father was John Cargill, b. abt. 1660. His mother may have been
named Mary
Anne. I have not found positive proof of his mother as yet. The
1660 John was a son of John Cargill, b. Rattray, Perthshire, Scotland, 03
Dec1620 who was the third child and second son of John Cargill, b.abt.1582
and Jeane Gray. The 1582 John was the eldest son of Donald Cargill, Vicar
of Rattray, b. abt. 1550 and Margaret Blair.
Dr. Featherston Cargill of London England, researched the Cargill families
of the
Scottish Highlands for about 25 years before he died without finding
a direct tie of the John Cargill of Dunedin to the Rhode Island Cargill's or
in fact to the Rattray Cargill's from whom Donald Cargill, the Martyr and
Covenanter descends. Donald, the Martyr, is a grandson of Donald Cargill,
Vicar of Rattray and the eldest son of his youngest child, Laurence Cargill.
Donald the "Martyr" had no descendants. He married in Aug 1655, a widow,
Margaret (Brown) Bethune, dau.of Nicol Brown, burgess of Edinburgh, and
widow of Andrew Bethune, who had died in 1653 leaving her liferentrix of the
estate of Blebo, which lies a few miles east of Cupar, not far from St.
Andrews. She died one year and one day after their marriage without issue.
The John Cargill you reference in Dunedin was one of seventeen children of
Captain
William Cargill and Mary Ann Yates and was the father of Dr.
Fetherston Cargill. Captain William was a son of James Cargill and Marion
Jamieson. Their ancester is James Cargill, b. prob. Dundee Scotland, 1703,
d.1779, m. Elizabeth Wilson, dau. of Francis Wilson and Margaret Ogilvy.
This is as far back as Dr. Featherston Cargill could trace his ancestry back
with any degree of surety.
Roger
