Hi Mark. Recived your e-mail through my son's e-mail address. Please note my address:
rcargill3(a)stny.rr.com
I do not believe the information I have will help you with Henry Cargill, b.Canandaigua
NY, 12/26/1838. My Henry H. Cargill, youngest child of Nathan Cargill Jr. was b. prob.
(Oakland) MI abt. 1832/33, as that is where Nathan and Polly (Woodruff) Cargill were in
1832. Nathan and his brother William bought jointly 80 acres in Milford Twp. (Oakland) MI
on 11 Jun 1832, recorded in Detroit Land Office 02 Sep 1832. Nathan was b. prob.
Cumberland Twp. (Providence) RI abt.1805 and died intestate in 1833 in Novi Twp.(Oakland)
MI, will probated 13 Jun 1836; m. at Canadaigua (Ontario) NY, 04 Mar 1830, Polly Woodruff,
b. at Livonia (Livingston) NY, 1809, eldest dau.of Orange Woodruff and Prudence Hawley.
Nathan and Polly had two children: Hawley N., b. prob. Canandaigua NY abt. 1830 and Henry
H., b.(Oakland)MI abt.1832/33.
Nathan Cargill Jr. was the sixth of seven children and third son of Nathan Cargill Sr., b.
Cumberland Twp.(Providence) RI, 16 Mar 1768, d. Lima (Livingston) NY, 02 Oct 1852, m. (1)
Mercy Angell, b. (Providence) RI, a dau. of Job Angell and Lydia Fenner. Nathan Sr. m.
(2) Sybil Poppleton by whom he had nine children for a total of sixteen children. I do
not have vital records on all of Nathan Sr.'s children -- still researching.
Nathan Cargill Sr. was the fourth of eight children and third son of James Cargill 2nd, a
Revolutionary War soldier, b. North Kingstown (Washington) RI, 27 Feb 1729, d. Cumberland
Twp.(Providence) RI, 22 Nov 1804, m. 07 Dec 1752, Dorcas Arnold of Smithfield (Providence)
RI, b. 18 May 1732, d. 25 Sep 1825, seventh of eight children and fourth dau. of Daniel
Arnold and Bathsheba Ballou.
James Cargill 2nd was the third of six children and second son of James Cargill 1st,
immigrant ancestor, b. Aghadowey (Derry) N IRE abt.1687, d.Mendon (Worcester) MA, abt. Oct
1753 (will signed 27 Oct 1753, proved 07 Nov 1753), m. (1)1725, Phebe Smith, of Warwick
(Kent) RI, b.05 Dec 1699, d. South Kingstown (Washington) RI, 1736, eldest dau.of Benjamin
Smith Jr. and Phoebe Arnold, youngest dau. of Stephen Arnold and Sarah Smith.
Hopefully this will put into perspective what I signified by (Nathan, James, James) after
Nathan jr. and his elder brother Hartford Cargill. Hartford Cargill and Alice or Alla
Paul had fifteen children of which a son Henry A. Cargill, was b. in Bloomfield (Oakland)
MI, 12 Mar 1836, d. at Gaines (Genesee) MI, 06 Oct 1862 at age of 26 yrs 6 mos 25 ds and
is bur.in Lovejoy Cemetry, Vernon Twp.(Shiawasee) MI.
Hartford Cargill was an early settler of Oakland County MI having purchased 160 acres in
Bloomfield Twp.MI on 08 Nov 1830. Bloomfield was then one of the oldest townships of
Oakland County. His next acquisition of land was 80 acres in Lyon Twp. (Oakland) MI,
bounded by Novi Twp.and Milford Twp. He had also purchased lands in Shiawassee County and
is listed as one of the first landowners of that county. In Apr 1836 he acquired deed to
200 acres of land within the limits of what was then Mundy Twp. (Genesee) MI. He removed
from Bloomfield Twp (Oakland) MI in 1836 and became the first settler in Mundy Twp. (now
Gaines) Genesee County MI and remained there until he died 13 Jan 1861. His wife survived
him and d. at the home of her dau.and son-in-law, Dr. Hiram and Adelia A.(Cargill)
Webster, at Byron (Shiawasee) MI, 28 Jul 1863.
I have been intrigued by the Henry Holbrook Cargill and his father Heartwell Cargill for
some time, but have not found a place where they belong in my work.
From the immigrant ancestor James 1st, I descend through James Cargill 2nd and Dorcas
Arnold through James Cargill 3rd and Chloe Chaffe through their oldest son Arnold Cargill
and Sarah (Cook) Cargill through their youngest son Ira P. Cargill and Sarah Elvira Potter
through their eldest son Robert Arnold Cargill and Mary Emeline Gunn through their eldest
son Robert Ira Cargill and Mary Elma Ellis. I am the oldest of three sons of the latter.
You referred to a short passage you were reading about Hawley Cargill stating he
wasorphaned an early age. Although it is a fact that he was orphaned at abt. age 3 yrs, I
have not seen it written anywheres. Could you send me a copy of the article. As stated
earlier his father died in 1833, his mother, Polly, still alive 02 Nov 1837 when she
purchased 80 acres of land in Genesee County. I have not done any further research on her
to determine a death date or re-marriage.
Mark, please send me your e-mail address.
