For some time I have had a photocopy of part of a letter written by W W
Cargill enclosing his photograph. The letterhead gives the address as 'La
Crosse, Wis.' and in the letter he refers to his forthcoming 63rd birthday.
There is neither an addressee nor a date but I suspect it was written to the
sister of my great grandfather in Ireland.
I have recently received, from a relative in the USA, an article from Forbes
dated November 2002 about Cargill, the largest private company in USA, now
with 97,000 employees. WW Cargill and his brother Samuel, the sons of a
Scottish sea captain founded this company in 1865.
The evidence suggests that the WW Cargill referred to in the opening
paragraph and the founder of Cargill are the same person. I have searched
the Internet for more information about the person, his family and ancestry
but can only find more about the company. I would be grateful if anybody can
point me in the right direction. His place and date of birth would be a
great help.
