I came across a Rachel Cargill in some records of two brothers who served
in the civil war - John and James Hornbeck list their parents as Elezer
[Eleazer] Hornbeck and Raitchel Cargle. Eleazer is known to have been born
in Wawarsing, Ulster County, New York and lived there until moving to
Neversink, Sullivan County in the 1830's. Rachel does not show up in any of
the normal records as his spouse, but she is also known to have been born
in Wawarsing in 1795, and based on the birth of 5 children in the family,
best estimate is she might have died about 1826 - but no proof thus far.
Her parents were Abram Cargill and Tryntie (Catherine) Hornbeck. The
children of Eleazer were Jacob, Nelly, James, John and Joseph all born
between 1817 and 1830; it is likely all but Joseph were Rachel's natural
children … but not sure right now. I have seen some family trees listing
Abram Cargill as living 1758-1838 and possibly born in Scotland, but none
of this is verified. Does anyone have info on this branch of the family?…
