One of my gggrandfathers, James Cargill was born in Kirkwall & St Ola,
Orkney in 1805. He joined the Royal Navy as a boy and spent most of his
naval career in the Coastguard service in Ireland. It would appear that it
was on joining the RN that he was given the name Cargill for he was born
Corrigal.
I have traced his Corrigal line back to William, born c1700 in Orkney and
with some evidence to Hugh Corrigal of Cottisgarth who died in 1669.
There is an entry in Scottish Immigrants to North America, 1600s-1800s
as follows.
Corrigil, Adam, born 1742, farmer, resided in Evie, Orkney Islands, shipped
September 1774 from Kirkwall to Savannah Ga, in Marlborough, settled in
Richmond County Ga, married Janet
, children Katherine, William, Robert.
Whilst there is some discrepancy in dates it is possible that Adam is a son
of William above.
