I would like to add my 2 cents' worth to the debate over the origins of Cornelius
Cargill. (And that's probably all it's worth. LOL)
I agree with the information Nancy Clower posted earlier in this thread that Cornelius was
probably born c. 1690 in Virginia, son of John Cargill the surveyor and his wife, Sarah.
The Rev. John Cargill is so much better documented that information about his
contemporary, John Cargill the surveyor, tends to get lost. (There is even an article in
"The William and Mary Quarterly," Vol. 23, No. 2, p. 145, that refers to
Cornelius as "the other son" of the Rev. John Cargill.) Generally, I think
everyone respects the scholarship reflected in the W & M Quarterly, but I don't
see how Cornelius could have been the son of the Rev. John, whose exact b/d is not known,
but who was probably born only about 10 years before Cornelius. Cornelius was also about
20 years older than the Rev. John Cargill's son, John. The only way I can see
Cornelius as the son of the Rev. John is if the Rev. John was older than he is generally
thought to be and had a first marriage which has not been documented!
. That could account for the gap in age between Cornelius and the Rev. John Cargill's
son, John.
I am a descendant of Cornelius Cargill's son, John Cargill, and Rachel Tinsley. Would
love to exchange information with other family researchers. I made a trip to Lunenburg
County, and I think I have deciphered Cornelius's many marriages. Please post or
e-mail me at sehoytwo(a)aol.com. Thanks!
