Hi Jonathan
Thank you so much for this information. It's very
interesting that the whole family was connected to
Southwell. I don't suppose the name Challands has come
up in connection with the family?
In the 1873 Return of Owners of Land for
Nottinghamshire, there's a James Cargill resident in
Coddington (nr Newark) who owned 7 acres worth £15, 15
shillings a year - is this one of your James. Is the
Mary Hudson in the Times obituary James Dudley's
sister?
I might try and find JDC's will now you've told me
when he died, to see if there's any mention of my
Challands or Blatchleys.
Have you been to Southwell? It's a lovely little town
- I believe the Minster is the smallest in Britain.
Unfortunately I didn't know about the Cargills then,
so I didn't see the memorial window. I'll try and get
over there again - it's not a huge distance from
Coventry. If I do, is there anything you'd like me to
look for?
Thanks for all your help.

Hi Joanna,
Nice to see someone with an interest in the CARGILL
of Southwell<Grin>.
James Dudley CARGILL was the son of James CARGILL &
Mary Ann DUDLEY.
JDC was baptised at Southwell on 7 Dec 1822 and
died 2 Oct 1882 he never
married.
James CARGILL was for many years a School Master at
the Collegiate Grammar
School, Southwell but does not seem to have been the
Head, a post reserved
for Church-of-England Clergy.
However three of his sons James Dudley, Robert John
& Ebenezer became CofE
Clergy.
John Dudley becoming Head Master of the same school
he would have attended
as a boy.
Many graduates of the Southwell Grammar School went
on to University, and
JDC went to Cambridge.
The entry in the Alumni book shows :
