Am searching for info on the Monroe/Cargile family who moved from central Georgia (around
Ogelthorpe, Jasper, Pike, Meriwether Cos.) to Clay Co. AL, probably sometime shortly after
1844. Brothers James and William settled near the Hatchet Creek, near the community of
Coleta, where there had estates and operated a store. The 1870 census lists James,
(surname spelled "Cargel",) 40, and wife Nancy, 36, with three young daughters.
Next door was apparently mother, Sarah. Brother William J. was nearby, 46, with wife
S.A., 34, and four young children. Neighbors remember a Bessie Cargile living there, who
died in 1948, and reportedly married C.A. Monroe, commonly known as "Bud". His
date of death was left blank on the joint headstone in nearby Bethlehem Methodist Church
cemetery.I also have found a CA Monroe at the Millerville PO per the 1870 census, but
don't have a complete record...also, ages don't fit so this man may have been
Bud's daddy. It is believed that Bessie and !
Bud had no children. Am interested in corresponding with anyone who might have any info
on this branch of my family. Thanks.
