New to this list and thought I'd start out with my CAREYs. My GGrandfather
was William CAREY, b. 1809/10, presumably in County Mayo as he indicated on
his Citizenship application that he emigrated to the USA from "County Mayo
via Sligo", so I'm presuming he's from Mayo, and simply travelled overland to
Sligo to board the ship. He married Margaret KILROY, b. County Cavan 1806,
mothers name Ann, also b. in Cavan. They emigrated to the USA in 1829,
settling in Coeymans, NY [15 mi. S. of Albany] where their 5 children were
born: Patrick b. 1833; Robert b. 1834; Richard b. 1839; James Joseph [my
Grandfather & Namesake] b. 1844, and Ann, b. 1847. In 1854, them emigrated
to Wisconsin, settling in Aurora [later renamed Auroraville] in Waushara
County, where they farmed and later went into the cranberry business, at one
time being the area's largest employer [2800 employees in 1870's]. James
Joseph married Mary Alice Ryan of nearby Berlin, WI [Green Lake County] and
Neshkoro [Marion Township, Marquette County]. Their son Robert was my Dad.
Any and all responses welcomed. Looking for both ancestors & descendents in
Ireland and information on William & Margaret's other children and their
descendents in the USA. With all good wishes,
/S/
