Thanks for your welcome to the discussion list. For circa 40 years I have
been researching the genealogy of the parishes of the Beara Peninsula, Co.
Cork (south-west). See my website:-
http://www.swiftsite.com/odwyer/ and aspects of my research work, etc., are
covered in various IGSI (Irish Genealogical Society International) sites
which can be found in Cyndi's List (Irish Section) on the internet. Just to
let you know that there was a settlement of Careys in the Adrigole Parish in
the very early 1800s. They were said to have come there from the Coomhola
area of Bantry Parish to work an iron ore furnace. Peter Carey & Philip
Carey were well-established in Adrigole by the Tithes List of 1827. In the
1830s I find parents like Batt Carey & Margaret Moynihan, Francis Carey &
Catherine O'Sullivan, Philip Carey & Mary O'Sullivan, Patrick Carey &
Mary
Murphy ---- and, further on down in the 1860s, Alexander Carey & Mary
O'Sullivan, Alexander Carey & Ellen O'Sullivan, etc. --- having families
there. There were Arthur Cecil Carey (wife Cara Ellen ____), a Bank Manager
in Castletownbere in 1922; James Carey (& Wife Sarah Finlay) in
Castletownbere in the 1830s. An interesting note here is that a son of
theirs settled in England, and his surname was changed from Carey to Carew;
John Carey (m. Mary Young) was in Castletownbere (a seaport & naval base) in
the 1880s. His father Richard was a Coastguard; and a Thomas Carey (from
Loughrea, Co. Galway (m. to another Schoolteacher Anna Maria Kennedy) in the
Allihies Parish in the late 1890s and early 1900s. If your Listers'
ancestors had no connection with the Beara Peninsula (which I research
only), not to worry. I just said I would throw in my few cents worth, as I
appreciated your courtesy in welcoming me to the List.
Best wishes,
Riobard (=Gaelic for Robert) O'Dwyer.

Subject: Welcome From The CAREY List Mom
Hello,
Welcome to the CAREY-L discussion list. Our group is small but very
friendly
and helpful. Please feel free to post your queries and or any
information
you may wish to share. If you want to observe for a few days and just get
the "feel" of this list, that's OK, too.
But don't feel that you are being ignored if no one answers your post. It
just means that no one has found a connection at this time. Try posting
your
message again later. Send your messages to: CAREY-L(a)rootsweb.com
To subscribe & unsubscribe ONLY, send command to:

If you are new to the Internet, or to Mailing Lists, here are a few
helpful
hints:
1. Make your Subject Line specific; i.e., Name, Place, Time Frame, etc..
Example 1: Ebenezer B. CAREY, b. 1812, Washington Co., KY
Example 2: CAREY Marriages, Wash. Co., KY, 1800-1850
Most people are subscribed to many lists, and only have time to briefly
scan
the messages. You don't want the person who may be your best
connection
to
overlook or delete your message.
2. If you are replying to a message, be sure your reply relates to the
original message. If it is a different subject, change the subject line
accordingly.
3. As of now, I have set the reply to go to the individual, instead of to
the list. If you want to respond to the list as well, so that everyone
sees
your answer, simply put the list address in the "To:" box:
CAREY-L(a)rootsweb.com
4. It's very helpful if you capitalize all SURNAMES in the body of your
message. This helps people to quickly scan the entire message.
5. Limit your messages to one subject. Send separate messages, as many
as
you like, for each separate subject.
This group is for the discussion of ALL possible spellings of the name
CAREY,
such as: CARY, CARREY, or any other possible variation. There is a
separate
CARY list, however, and you may want to subscribe to that one, as
well.
It
never hurts to cover ALL the bases.
If you need any help, or have any questions about this list, please feel
free
to contact me directly. I wish you much success in your research.
