Hi,
My Great-grandfather John CAREY was born in Ireland in about 1844, served in
Minnesota's 2nd Cavalry during the Civil War. His pension file states he was
living in Winona, MN when he enlisted at age 18. He married Mary RIORDAN in
Minneapolis at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in 1874 and they moved
to Morris, MN where he froze to death in 1880. They had 4 children: Thomas,
Mary, William, and Catherine. I have found no clues to his parents or
siblings except that they were from Ireland, and that his daughter, in the
1920 census, incorrectly gives her father's place of birth as Wisconsin .
Could she have overheard talk of family in Wisconsin as she was growing up?
