I am researching my great great grandfather Maurice. He married Elizabeth Selway in
Portsmouth. Family tradition has it that he was a seaman or even a royal marine. I have
not been able to trace when he came to Australia. His wife and children arrived in 1870
aboard the Lady Jocelyn.
They lived in Williamstown, Victoria at the time of Elizabeth's death. Maurice died
in Warrnambool where he had lived with his brothers John (1813 - 1895) and Richard (1834 -
1904) His mother Ellen nee Oshea (or Shea) ((circa 1797 - 1864) also died in Warrnambool.
John Carey was a Harbour Pilot at Warrnambool. Richard was the Lighthouse keeper.
Maurice's occupation on his death certificate says he was "...... of the Home and
Victorian Military and Naval Forces."
(The first word is as yet undisciphered)
If anyone has some helpful tips as to how I might discover more about Maurice and his
family and how and when he came to Australia I would be grateful.
Thanks
