Also note Mike GAINOR's message below regarding the Counts named
Gerlach. I do not yet know if there is a connection between the Counts
named Gerlach and the GERLACH family. Note that theses counts used
"Gerlach" as a Christian name rather than a surname. Additional
information about the Counts named Gerlach can be found at the following
site:

Also note that the Kusel parish books should be available on microfilm
through the LDS libraries. If anyone undertakes this tedious research,
please let me know what you find.

Sue, my National Geographic World Atlas shows a Kusel maybe 10 miles
inside the Palitinate just east of the corner where it wraps around
Saarland. I found a website today that speaks of a Count Gerlach having
constructed a Lichtenberg Castle at Kusel in the early 13th century. I
don't know how common the name was, but perhaps there was an enclave of
Gerlachs at Kusel. There was at least a Count Gerlach III, which would
have followed Counts I and II, which would go back into the latter half
of the 12th century.
