Message Board Post:
After doing further research, I have determined that there were two Black/Mulatto Calvin
CARELOCKs, born in the 1850s, who lived in Union County, North Carolina. Previously I had
mistakenly believed that these individuals were the same person. Both Calvins also had
many children.
Those two Calvin CARELOCKs were:
1. R. Calvin "Calvin" CARELOCK (1852 - 1927), Mulatto, s/o John HAMILTON and
Ann/Anne CARELOCK, who married Lee Ann COVINGTON, in 1872, and died in 1927. Calvin lived
in Lanes Creek Township, Union Co., NC, 1870; Lanes Creek Township, Anson Co., NC, 1880;
and Marshville, Union Co., NC, 1910, 1920. Calvin is reportedly bd. in "New Town
Cemetery." Lee Ann's tombstone in the First Church of God Cemetery, Marshville,
Union Co., NC, says that she was the wife of R. C. CARLOCK. So far I have found this
Calvin to have been a domestic servant in 1870, a farm laborer in 1880, and a day laborer
in 1927.
2. Calvin A. CARELOCK (b. 1852 - 1859; d. 1933), Black, s/o Abraham CARELOCK and Mary
GREEN; m. #1 Nancy CARELOCK (yes, maiden name apparently CARELOCK), ca. 1872; m. #2. Mary
(or Marie) KELLY or KELLER, 1902; d. 1933. Calvin was reportedly buried in Philadelphia,
NC. Calvin lived in Union Co., NC, 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920. Calvin's death
record lists his wife's name as Mamie. I do not yet have enough information to
determine whether or not Mary and Mamie were the same person. Calvin was a farmer.
There were also other Black Calvin CARELOCKs born at later dates in this same area, with
at least one possibly still living.
