The obituary for Mary Lee CARELOCK REID (1916 - 2014) of Monroe, North Carolina; Atlanta,
Georgia; Vancouver, Washington; Portland, Oregon; and Gresham, Washington, who died July
1, 2014, can be found at the following site:
http://www.terryfamilyfuneralhome.com/sitemaker/sites/terryf0/obit.cgi?us...
Mary was a member of one of the Black CARELOCK families.
Additional research shows the following discrepancies between the information found in the
obituary and information found in censuses and on the FamilySearch site:
1. The obituary names her father as John CARLOCK. In all records so far I have found him
listed as Henry CARELOCK.
2. The obituary says that Mary was "the first daughter to John and Mary Carlock who
went on the have two more daughters and three sons." Although this may technically
be correct, I believe that the sister Lula who is mentioned as having preceded her in
death is her older half-sister Lola CARELOCK, b. 1902 - 1903. Lola's mother may have
been Cinda DAVIS who Henry married Sept. 10, 1899, in Marshville, Union Co., NC. Henry
did not marry Mary's mother Mary MCCULLOUGH until Feb. 19, 1908, also in Union Co.,
NC.
3. Also, Mary had four brothers, not three. Her brother James CARELOCK (ca. 1919 - 1938)
was not mentioned in the obituary.
4. With regard to the sisters, I did not find any reference to a sister named Neal
CARELOCK, but I did find a sister Inez "Nezzie" CARELOCK MEDLIN (1917 - 1987).
Following is Mary's CARELOCK lineage back to her grandfather Calvin CARELOCK (b. 1852
- 1853, NC) who married #1 Henry's mother Leamah COVINGTON, in 1872; and #2 Mary
FLETCHER, in 1902. I found one record listing his mother as Mary and another listing his
mother as Leina.
Calvin CARELOCK (b. 1852 - 1853)
Henry CARELOCK (b. 1871 - 1872)
Mary Lee CARELOCK (1916 - 2014)
Note that there was also a second Calvin CARELOCK (b. 1855 - 1856), also Black, who was
also living in Union County, North Carolina, at the time of the 1880 census. That Calvin
CARELOCK married Nancy CARELOCK, ca. 1872. (Yes, her maiden name appears to have also
been CARELOCK.)
One of these two Calvin CARELOCKs appears to have been the son of Abram "Abe"
CARELOCK (b. ca. 1829), Black, and his wife Ann. I will need to relook at the following
references to see if I can determine which Calvin CARELOCK was Abram's son:
1. 1870 United States Federal Census, P.O. Monroe, Lanes Creek Township, Union Co., NC,
pg. 26, dwelling 196, family 191.
2. 1880 United States Census, Lanes Creek, Union Co., NC
3. Family Search, Roxie Carelock in entry for Jake Carelock, "North Carolina, Deaths,
1931-1994"
Also note that Mary's father Henry CARELOCK was apparently not listed in his
father's household at the time of the 1880 census. Instead, he was listed as a
servant child, age 8, living in the household of Ed S. and Ada M. MARSH. Henry's
parents are listed in both of his marriage records.
