I am still in the process of sorting through the information found in the new Mecklenburg
County, NC, book which I mentioned in my posting yesterday. I will send corrections and
comments as I come across them.
I find no evidence that Jane BROOKS married Samuel CARELOCK. According to Baylus C.
BROOKS (bcbrooks(a)delabrooke.com), at the following site, Martha Jane "Jane"
BROOKS instead married James B. CARLOCK, and the couple lived in Marion Co., TN, and were
the parents of three sons, including William H. CARLOCK (1827 - 1899) of Conway Co., AR.

At the following site Baylus C. BROOKS also lists Samuel A. CARELOCK, Jr., as marrying
Hester BROOKS, daughter of William BROOKS, I; and Lydia BROOKS, possible daughter of
William BROOKS, I, as marrying Moses CARLOCK.

However, at the same site Baylus C. BROOKS poses the following question. I would also be
interested in the answer to this question.
"NOTE: another reference to a wife of William Brooks I comes from a report written
by Bessie Carelock Covington Renfrow on the Carelock family tree. It states: 'Samuel
Carelock Jr. married his stepsister, Hester Brooks.' If this is true, then Samuel
Carelock Sr.'s widow would have to have been married to William Brooks I and she would
have to have been his 2nd or ... dare I say it... 3rd wife! I'd like to know where
this information came from. Bessie (or anyone who can help), if you read this, please get
in touch with me!"
Furthermore, according to pages 437 and 438 of the book "History of the Carlock
Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, James CARLOCK, father of the
above-mentioned William H. CARLOCK, was son of Joseph, Lemuel, Hanchrist, David. This is
not the first time I have seriously questioned Joseph and John being sons of Lemuel, as
listed on page 437 of Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK's book. I would very much like to know
where Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK found information indicating that Joseph and John were sons
of Lemuel. It seems much more likely that James B. CARLOCK who married Martha Jane BROOKS
was a member of Frederick's family than Hanchrist's family. Other reasons that I
question whether or not Joseph and John were sons of Lemuel are as follows:
1. In at least one record James spelled his surname as "CARELOCK." All other
known CARELOCKs are descendants of Frederick, not Hanchrist.
2. John CARLOCK, supposed son of Lemuel, lived in Simpson Co., KY, near my direct
ancestor George W. CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC, who m. Rachel LANDERS, 1805, Warren
Co., KY. George is believed to be a son of the above-mentioned David CARLOCK, probable
son of Frederick. David also migrated to Warren Co., KY.
3. John's son William Henry CARLOCK migrated to Fayette Co., IL, near where George
(b. 1779, NC) and several of his adult children also migrated.
4. John's grandson Luther Carel/Carol CARLOCK/CEARLOCK (s/o of George b. 1812, KY)
used the spelling "CEARLOCK" and is the progenitor of the Stephens Co., OK,
CEARLOCK line and the Beckham Co., OK, CURLOCK line. All other known CARLOCK descendants
who used the spellings "CEARLOCK" and "CURLOCK" are descended from
George (b. 1779, NC).
