I've found my great-grandmothers application for my great -grandfathers Civil War
Pension, but I've found a big twist.
She was denied several times due to the fact that my gr-grandfather was lawfully married
in 1865 (to Mary C. Brock) while near Tunnel Hill, GA with Sherman's 17th Corp. He
"disappeared in 1872 leaving his wife and three children in Walker Cty, GA!! Mary C.
Brock-Smith ended up getting his pension until the end of her life in the 1920's. He
did not marry my great-grandmother until 1888. According to my gr-grandmother's appeal
in 1902 she states that she (Mary Baker) ran away from home at the age of 18 from Morgan
County, AL. She goes on to say, the feelings between her brothers and Asa Smith were
"very bad" as her brothers "followed them and attempted to kill Mr. Smith
several times". She goes on to say they "gives them the dodge in the state of
Tenn" and came to IL, but for 2 years were "afraid to let themselves be
known". My grandfather was born to them in 1873 in Somerville, AL. In 1880 they
appeared as husband, wife and son in the Lawrence Cty, TN census. In 1888 I have a!
marriage certificate from Williamson Cty, IL for them. In 1889 Asa died.
If Mary Bakers story about running away from home at 18 ( 1872-73) with a 30 year old man
(IL Civil War veteran), having a baby and being threatened and followed by her brothers
sounds familiar to anyone within the Baker families PLEASE contact me. I think I have only
half a story here. I'd love to hear the rest.
