Kathleen:
The following information, plus some information you previously provided
with regard to their children, is all that I have found so far with regard
to Susan and her husband:
Susan CARELOCK
b. ca. 1802, IL
m. Edward L. COMPTON, May 21, 1820, Jefferson Co., IL
d. after 1860, Milam Co., TX
As previously mentioned, I am not aware of any other members of our
CARLOCK/CARELOCK family being in Jefferson Co., IL, as early as 1820. Based
on the spelling of her surname, my best guess is that Susan is somehow
descended from Frederick CARLOCK (s/o David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH)
of Mecklenburg Co., NC. Frederick's brother Hanchrist had descendants born
in Morgan Co., IL, as early as 1817. Descendants of George W.
CARLOCK/CEARLOCK, b. ca. 1779, NC (my line), probable descendants of
Frederick, were in Fayette Co., IL, by ca. 1829 - 1831. (George's family
was in the Logan Co./Warren Co., KY, area, by ca. 1804. Note that the
surname "CEARLOCK" is pronounced like "CARELOCK.") Descendants of
Frederick's grandson Ebenezer "Eber" CARLOCK were in Union Co., IL, by
1841.
I question the accuracy of Susan's being born in Illinois.
See the following map for the proximity of these counties to each other:
http://www.census-online.com/links/IL/
We presently have much more information about Hanchrist's descendants than
Fredericks, based partly on the fact that many more of Hanchrist's
descendants than Frederick's are included in the book "History of the
Carlock Family," by Marion Pomeroy CARLOCK, 1929, and partly on the fact
that many of Frederick's descendants used alternative spellings such as
"CARELOCK," "CEARLOCK," and "CURLOCK."
Let me know if you find any new information with regard to either Susan's or
Edward's ancestry. The geographical location of Edward's ancestors could
possibly provide a clue to the geographical location of Susan's ancestors.

Subject: Susan Carelock! Help!
As some of you know I have been looking for my Susan Carelock married to
Edward L.
Compton for several years now and not even a hint has come my
way -- nothing to grab onto at all. So, I am wondering if she was Black,
Mulatto, Native American - or was her first husband a Carelock and died and
she remarried to Compton?? I am grasping at straws.
Of course I have always wondered about "mail order brides". Some have
scoffed at the idea but it did happen!
Any ideas would be helpful!
