This is in reply to the following e-mail which I received today with regard
to Susan CARELOCK who m. Edward L. COMPTON, May 21, 1820, Jefferson Co., IL.
This marriage can be found in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index.
At this point I cannot positively identify Susan. I also am not aware of
any other members of the CARLOCK/CARELOCK/CEARLOCK family living in
Jefferson Co., IL, as early as 1820.
The spelling "Carelock" suggests that Susan was somehow descended from
Frederick CARLOCK (s/o David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH) who lived in
Mecklenburg Co., NC. It is possible that Susan is one of the
as-yet-unidentified females descended from Frederick. The following
descendants/probable descendants of Frederick had as-yet-unidentified
daughters who appear on the 1790 census and would have been about the right
age to have been this Susan. There may be others.
Frederick CARLOCK of Mecklenburg Co., NC (s/o Frederick CARLOCK, David
GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH)
Henry CARLOCK/CARELOCK/CURLOCK/KERLOCK of Rutherford Co., NC, and Campbell
Co., TN (probable s/o Frederick CARLOCK, David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans
GERLACH)
I do find two Susanna/Susannah CARLOCKs in my database, both descended from
Frederick's brother Hanchrist, who would have been about the right age to
have been this Susan, but it seems unlikely that one of these
Susanna/Susannahs would have spelled her surname "Carelock." They are:
Susannah CARLOCK, b. Jan. 11, 1803 (d/o Job CARLOCK, Hanchrist CARLOCK,
David GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH). Susannah's family lived in Overton
Co., TN.
Susanna CARLOCK, b. 1804 (d/o Moses CARLOCK, Hanchrist CARLOCK, David
GERLACH/CARLOCK, Hans GERLACH). Susanna's family migrated from VA, to TN,
to Morgan Co., IL.
Another possibility is that Susan was a widow and CARELOCK was the surname
of her previous husband.
Please let me know if you find any additional information with regard to
Susan or her ancestry. If you can find Susan on the 1850 or later censuses,
you should be able to identify the state of her birth, as well as the states
of her parents' births. The original marriage record could provide clues,
as well.

I will greatly appreciate any information you may have about this
family.
172. Susan CARELOCK, m. Edward L. COMPTON, May 21, 1820, Jefferson
Co., IL
This is all I have about Susan which isn't much. It could be that she was
black
or mulatto as well - "Susan is thought by the Compton clan to be of
American Indian ancestory. They have no proof of this that I am aware of.
There son John Berry is very dark skinned." Edward's father is thought to
be William (no proof) and is said to be from the Carolina's as well. Edward
was born in North Carolina so it is possible Susan could have been as well.
Thank you! Kathleen Grone
