There was another Cardwell in the Mexican War, this one from Hopkins Co KY. He
was Thomas R. Cardwell, born 1824and died 1915, married Sarah Sisk. As far as
I know, he never went to California! He is buried in Grapevine Cemetery,
Madisonville, KY.

Rand-your email about the Cardwell in California is most interesting,
since I have an almost identical incidence in my line. I have a William
Lumpkin Cardwell,b.1827,GA (son of John, b.1800,GA, and Pheraby
[Phoebe] Gosdin, b.? m. 1816) who served in the Mexican war from
29 June 1846 to 26 May 1847 in Co.K, 1st regiment of Alabama
infantry(Coffey's). He and his brother, Benjamin served together
in the same outfit. They both returned to Alabama and William went
to work in the steel mills in Talledega Co., AL. The 1850 census lists
William living with the Silas Garrigus family with occupation listed
as an apprentice hammerman. Not long after that, he went to
California, supposedly to look for gold, and was never heard from again
by the family. Could this be just a coincidence, or two cousins chasing
rainbows, or just another old family tale with no firm basis? I have tried
and tried to tie my line to the Robert Cardwell line with no success.
Just wanted to share this info with you. I have military records on William
and brother Benjamin as well as their father, John (war of 1812 and
Seminole Indian uprising of 1818).Their brother, John II later served in
the Civil War in the 8th Confederate Cavalry, and died in the war.
